Super Bowl LVIII Smashes TV Ratings Record with 123.4 Million Viewers

Super Bowl LVIII Smashes TV Ratings Record with 123.4 Million Viewers

The Super Bowl's longest match will be remembered as the most-viewed show in TV history.

According to data from Nielsen and Adobe Analytics, the thrilling overtime victory of the Kansas City Chiefs against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday garnered widespread attention, with an impressive average viewership of 123.4 million across both television and streaming platforms. This remarkable figure shattered the previous year's record of 115.1 million, achieved during Kansas City's last-play triumph over the Philadelphia Eagles, reflecting a significant 7% increase in viewership. The game's intense and captivating nature evidently contributed to this substantial surge in audience engagement.

The game aired on CBS, Nickelodeon, and Univision, while also being streamed on Paramount+ and the NFL's digital platforms.

Nielsen reported that an unprecedented 202.4 million people tuned in for at least some part of the game across all networks, marking a significant 10% increase compared to last year's viewership of 183.6 million. This remarkable surge underscores the widespread and heightened interest in the event compared to the previous year.

The CBS broadcast maintained an average viewership of 120 million, setting a new record for the network's most-watched Super Bowl. This surpassed their previous milestone of 112.34 million viewers, achieved during the 2016 game featuring the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers. The increased viewership reflects the continued growth in popularity and engagement with the Super Bowl on the CBS network.

Part of the rise in viewership can be attributed to a shift in the method of counting viewers. In 2020, Nielsen started incorporating out-of-home viewers into its ratings, initially from specific markets. This measurement practice has now expanded to cover all 50 states starting this year. The broadened scope in counting viewers has contributed to the observed increase in overall viewership figures.

The game on Sunday marked only the second instance in the 58 Super Bowls played that it went into overtime. The first occurrence took place in 2017, with the New England Patriots staging a comeback from a 28-3 deficit to secure a 34-28 victory against the Atlanta Falcons. This rare event added to the historical significance of the match, as overtime outcomes in the Super Bowl are relatively uncommon.

Sean McManus, the chairman of CBS Sports, commented on the overtime session that occurred on Sunday. This extra play was triggered by an event in the fourth quarter when San Francisco's kicker, Jake Moody, had an extra point blocked, maintaining the game as a close three-point difference. McManus acknowledged the pivotal role this incident played in setting the stage for the dramatic overtime period during Sunday's match.

"I was managing my expectations, but I had a bit of hope that it would happen, I can't imagine a Super Bowl any better or more exciting than this."

Kansas City forced the game into overtime with a crucial field goal from Harrison Butker. Following the 49ers' field goal on the opening possession of overtime, the Chiefs secured the victory when Patrick Mahomes threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman. This decisive play in overtime sealed the win for Kansas City in a thrilling conclusion to the game.

Adding to the allure of this Super Bowl was the presence of pop sensation Taylor Swift. The global superstar, who is romantically involved with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, attended the event. This high-profile relationship has introduced a fresh wave of fans to the NFL, contributing to the increased appeal and excitement surrounding the game.

For the second consecutive year, the Super Bowl maintained an average viewership exceeding 100 million, marking a significant rebound from a period where four out of the five games leading up to 2023 had fallen short of that threshold due to the rise of cord-cutting. This trend included the 2021 Super Bowl between the Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which garnered 95.2 million viewers and stood as the lowest TV-only average for the big game since 2007. The recent upward trajectory in viewership suggests a renewed and growing interest in the Super Bowl spectacle.

A record-breaking Super Bowl viewership, with an average of more than 2.2 million viewers – the highest ever for a Spanish-language network. Since 2014, the Super Bowl has been broadcast in Spanish in the United States, and this milestone underscores the growing popularity and engagement of Spanish-speaking audiences with the prestigious sporting event.

The NFL playoffs experienced a surge in popularity, with an average of 38.5 million viewers over the first three weekends, marking a notable 9% increase compared to the previous year. This upward trend followed a regular season that maintained an average viewership of 17.9 million, tying for the second-highest since tracking averages began in 1995. The increased viewership throughout both the playoffs and regular season indicates a growing and sustained interest in NFL football.
