Timberwolves-Pistons Brawl: Five Players, Two Coaches Ejected in Heated Second-Quarter Clash

Timberwolves-Pistons Brawl: Five Players, Two Coaches Ejected in Heated Second-Quarter Clash

The Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves meet just twice a season, but their showdown at Target Center on Sunday was anything but routine. Tensions erupted when Wolves big man Naz Reid, frustrated by a foul from Pistons rookie Ron Holland, wagged his finger in Holland’s face. Before the moment could pass, Minnesota’s Donte DiVincenzo stepped in, delivering a slight shove.

“Obviously things went too far,” Bickerstaff said. “But what you see is guys looking out for one another, guys trying to protect one another, guys trying to have each other’s backs. … Those are non-negotiables in our locker room.”

The result was complete anarchy. When DiVincenzo put his hands close to Holland's head and neck, a brief argument degenerated into violence, and Detroit retaliated violently. Coaches and players had to come in to calm the tense situation as DiVincenzo crashed into courtside broadcasters and spectators due to a swarm of Pistons.

Donte DiVincenzo swatted Ron Holland's layup attempt with 9:29 remaining, causing the two players to collide in midair and smash hard to the floor. Isaiah Stewart misfired once more on the subsequent play after missing a short jumper and grabbing his own rebound. Simone Fontecchio intervened at the other end and took a charge from DiVincenzo.

Stewart pushed Gobert, resulting in a technical foul, while he and Rudy Gobert assisted his teammates in standing up. Shortly after, Holland fouled Naz Reid during a drive, which heightened tensions. Reid went straight up to the rookie and yelled his fury while waving a finger. Holland and DiVincenzo got into a fight, and players and coaches quickly rushed the court to break it up.

“I thought leading up to that the game was way too physical,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said. “It’s unfortunate, but we knew they were a super physical team. They hit you, they hold you, all the stuff that you want your physical teams to do. But I just thought it got to a point where players were going to take matters into their own hands. You don’t ever want that.”
