Torres Fires Barcelona past Atlético, Setting up a Copa del Rey Final Showdown against Real Madrid

Torres Fires Barcelona past Atlético, Setting up a Copa del Rey Final Showdown against Real Madrid

Barcelona earned a spot in its first Copa del Rey final in four seasons by defeating Atletico Madrid 1-0 in a fierce match. A much-anticipated "El Clasico" matchup versus bitter rival Real Madrid is set up by the victory.

Ferran Torres struck the game-winning goal in the first half on Wednesday, ensuring the Catalan team's passage. Following a thrilling 4–4 tie in Barcelona in February, Xavi’s team held fast to secure a spot in the championship match with the aggregate score set at 5–4.

In a dramatic match that extended into extra time on Tuesday, Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 5–4 on aggregate to secure their place in the Copa del Rey final. As Madrid and Barcelona square up in the competition's championship final for the first time since the 2013–14 season, when Los Blancos won the trophy, this sets up a thrilling matchup.

The heartbreak was all too familiar to Atletico Madrid. Another painful home loss only made the frustration even worse after the team's agonizing Champions League round of 16 loss to Madrid on penalties last month.

Barcelona, the most successful team in the Copa del Rey with 31 titles, makes its first appearance in the final since defeating Athletic Bilbao to win the cup in 2021. In contrast, Madrid, who won its 20th Copa title in 2023 after defeating Osasuna, is making its second final appearance in three seasons.

The season's third El Clasico—another high-stakes match in the most intense rivalry in Spanish football—will take place in Seville on April 26.

With 31 championships, Barcelona is the most decorated team in the Copa del Rey and is making its first appearance in the final since defeating Athletic Bilbao to win the cup in 2021. Madrid, on the other hand, is playing in its second final in three seasons after defeating Osasuna in 2023 to win its 20th Copa title.

Set for April 26 in Seville, the eagerly awaited final will be the third El Clasico of the season, another high-stakes contest in the most intense rivalry in Spanish football.

Barcelona has already demonstrated its superiority over Real Madrid twice this season, defeating the opposition 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final in January and winning La Liga by a resounding 4-0 margin last October. However, because a Champions League matchup is still possible, their paths might meet again.

This was a lost chance for Atletico Madrid to get to its first Copa del Rey final since 2013, when it defeated Real Madrid to win its tenth championship. Diego Simeone's team had demonstrated tenacity in the first leg, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to salvage a thrilling 4–4 tie with two late goals.

After exhibiting incredible control inside the box and coolly finishing off a perfectly weighted through ball from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres gave the team the lead in the 27th minute. Desperate to reply, Atletico believed it had equalized in the 69th minute, but any thoughts of a comeback were dashed when Alexander Sorloth's shot was disallowed for offside.
