2024 Olympic Qualifiers Secure Paris Spots: Greece, Brazil, Spain, and Puerto Rico

The final two berths for the men’s basketball event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have been decided in this week full of basketball excitement and performances from across the world. It took place on Sunday, July 7, in the final part of the 2024 FIBA Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (OQTs) in Greece, Latvia, Puerto Rico, and Spain.

 

The teams from different regions had to compete vigorously in order to qualify for the Olympic games as only four top teams were allowed to qualify for Paris 2024. In the European championships, every match was important as the victory determined which countries would qualify to the elite Olympic competition the following year. When the drums and trumpets sounded at the end of these final classification games, fans witnessed these Olympic basketball outcomes, which determined not only the medal winners but also where each team that Paris 2024 will host.

 

 

TOURNAMENT LATVIA: LATVIA 69 - 94 BRAZIL

 

Brazil put up a commanding performance in Riga, Latvia, taking the lead with a strong 19-0 run in the final 3:21 of the first quarter are used in the current activities, while the rest of the first quarter is planned to be used in future endeavours. This paved way for their success in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament where they emerged as the champions in 2024.

The qualification for Brazil means that they would join Olympic Group B to contest in the first round matches against France on 27th of July, Germany on 30th of July and Japan on 2nd of August.

 

 

TOURNAMENT PUERTO RICO: LITHUANIA 68-79 PUERTO RICO

 

Puerto Rico moved into the Olympics finals for the first time after 2004.

 

In one of the games held in San Juan, the Puerto Rican team rose to the occasion in a manner that produced several brilliant players including Tremont Waters, 18-point scorer, and Jose Alvarado who scored 23 points. This result led to Puerto Rico winning 79-68 against Lithuania thus claiming the 12th and final spot in the Paris Games.

 

Currently, Puerto Rico is located with other a number of teams in the Group play stage in France and this include South Sudan, Serbia and the United States as its major rivals.

 

For Lithuania, Rokas Jokubaitis made Lithuania’s scoring attempts with a total of 16-points while Domantas Sabonis contributed to attempts with 10-points. Still, Lithuania was not able to qualify for the next stage of the competition.

 

 

TOURNAMENT SPAIN: SPAIN 86-78 BAHAMAS

 

Their persistence and character are demonstrated by 7 successive victories, and the level of their performance emphasizes the stubbornness of the adversary.

 

Spain had a good representation with Santiago Aldama securing 12 points with Lorenzo Brown adding 18 more points to the total, Willy Hernangomez scored 14 points while Usman Garuba contributed 10 points. While the Bahamas did manage to come out to the game with a lot of energy, this was surely cut short by their combined efforts that sought to ensure that Spain remained on top.

 

Deandre Ayton tops the point saga with 17 points, Valdez Edgecombe Jr 12 points, Buddy the Hield Hield contributed 19 points for Bahamas while Eric Gordon contributed 15 points for Bahamas.

 

This victory has ensured that Spain will be in Group A at the mighty Olympics in Paris, where they will have to give their best against Oz and Canada in the prelim stage.

 

 

TOURNAMENT GREECE: GREECE 80-69 CROATIA

 

This was the high point of Giannis Antetokounmpo in his first Olympic qualification period where his 23-point performance led Greece to victory over Croatia, 80-69. This win assured Greece’s participation in the Olympic basketball tournament, for the first in three years, since 2008.

 

Georgios Papagiannis, who posted 19 points in supporting Antetokounmpo, and Nick Calathes who contributed 14 points to the win. However, this Croatian team gave their all and was defeated to be led by Zubac who scored 19 points with 13 rebounds. Greek soccer team is now shifting their attention on the Group A match that will occur at the Paris Games where they will be challenging other strong teams such as Australia, Canada, Spain/ Bahamas and other strong teams.

 

During a press conference following the match, Antetokounmpo said, “We came in every game, you know, we knew that we had four finals to play and I think from game one on Monday evening [whether] we played a very good team, or a not so good team, we were focusing on ourselves, and I’m so happy how the games went so far, and we took our ticket to the Olympic Games.”

 

He added, "We knew that we had the opportunity to  something that we haven’t done for a lot of years. We had the opportunity to do it in our house, and I think the whole team, the coaching staff, the players, everybody, was extremely focused."

 

The United States remains one of the favorites after being the defending champions having won four successive gold medals The United States, France, Germany, Japan, Serbia, South Sudan, Canada, and Australia remain other nations confirmed of their places in next year’s Olympics in Paris. Besides, the other seven teams qualified on the basis of the performance of their respective teams during the last summer’s World Cup, while the position was automatically given to France as the host country.

 

After the World Cup, Any of the 24 teams played in the qualification matches that began last week to determine the four top teams. On Sunday, Brazil basically displaced other countries claiming the first rank while Greece was second.

 

The final place in the 12-player Olympic squad will be confirmed at the end of the tournament that is scheduled for later on Sunday. The Bahamas will take on Spain while in the other game it will be Lithuania up against Puerto Rico. The teams that are going to win these games are going to Paris to play with the rest of the eligible teams.
