At Wembley stadium on saturday evening, during the tilted match, Daniel Dubois proved himself with a bright performance when he knocked down his British counterpart, a rising figure in the boxing world, Anthony Joshua in the fifth round and thereby, defended the IBF heavyweight belt.
During the first round when AJ was in the uncomfortable position of being a favorite, Dubois managed to get on the aggressive and even landed a clean jab on the British boxer. Joshua was downed to the canvas by Dubois’s right hand in the closing moments of the first round of the match. People may have expected that after this round, Joshua was very much worried as he could barely get through it. In the second round after the knockdown, Joshua is getting back to his feet and begins to cover himself much better, and during this time, Dubois also did not stand idle and continued to apply pressure.
“I had a sharp opponent and a fast opponent," Joshua told DAZN when asked what went wrong. “And secondly, a lot of mistakes from my end."
Dubois was again relentless and had Joshua backed up in the third and fourth rounds before the bell put a halt to the onslaught. The fifth round was the decisive one.
In the fifth set, suddenly, it seemed that Joshua is getting his flow right after some poor of some of the strongest shots of the game. But one defensive lapse was sufficient to demonstrate that it was going to be costly. Dubois again delivered a strong overhand right to knock down Joshua on the mat again. A remarkable victory for Dubois was handed to him by referee Marcus McDonnell, who intervened with 2:03 remaining in the fight.
A 34 years old Joshua, like any man of his age, has previously been defeated by Andy Ruiz; he was outboxed twice by Oleksandr Usyk and lost to Dubois. These has hence led to the following questions; is Joshua a worthy champion and is he capable of withstanding the power of the heavyweight division and finally bag the title on offer? It is noteworthy that the victory in the second round in the middle of March against the former UFC heavyweight champion – Francis Ngannou, revived his career, nevertheless, the younger Dubois, who is 27 years old, showed his skills and turned his critics into fools.
After Dubois was accused of ‘giving up’ during his loss to Joyce in 2020, he flipped the script on the former champion, outclassing him in every aspect and staring him down. After the fight, the promoter, Eddie Hearn, teased a rematch fight by stating that Joshua believes that the Briton will be able to activate the rematch clause.
If one will presume that Usyk, the current champ of the heavyweight division, will be dethroned by Tyson Fury in their long-awaited rematch set for December 21 the next potential challenger for him may be the Joshua-Dubois fighter who has yet to be determined. But in the ‘boxing jungle’ nothing is predetermined and there will be many rises and falls before these two will meet.
Joshua’s record was 28-4 (25 KOs) at the time of writing, while Dubois’s display puts paid to any doubts that may have lingered about his courage and ability to shine under the most intense pressure and adrenalin surge of a packed Wembley.
