Alex Pereira Retains Light Heavyweight Title with Brutal 4th-Round TKO Over Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307

At UFC 307, Khalil Rountree Jr. looked to have the answer as he was able to dictate the fight for large chunks of the contest. But, no, they said Alex Pereira decided to alter the course that was set in stone, as he often does. Heavyweight, it was a violent fourth-round knock out that showed yet again why Pereira is still the UFC light heavyweight champion in that cage, and also why he is a formidable presence in the Octagon.

The bout ended when Pereira connected a string of hooks that made Rountree bend and eventually dropped him. But the destruction had started much earlier, and blood has already flown in advance to paint the canvas at this point. Based on what was observed at Delta Center the audience saw disassembly in the making. A patronising punishment and Rountree had to carry on his post fight interview as he experienced another bleed from the nose which was a sign that more damage was done.

As usual, Pereira kicked off the opening in dominance physically and mentally over top players and this, apart from power, cast dominating hue over the initial round. But, he met a tough opponent in Khalil Rountree who was calm-mannered striker. Unfortunately for Pereira, he was unable to establish his typical rhythm of striking due to the fact Rountree was a southpaw, making it much more difficult to time his shots and the champion.

Rountree put the clean hits in the early going and earned his position on the winner. Pereira did the same and managed to score with his own strikes though the nature of the exchanges were different, less wild and more methodical. Pereira in his previous fights had knocked down his opponents within the initial rounds but this fight seemed to be heading towards the ground with none preparing to quit. Pereira looked the favourite but there were signs that the fight would be far from one sided although it may have been a little hard to decipher at first.

The excitement was at its peak when Rountree, having landed a powerful right-hand blow that momentarily saw the head of Pereira nodded, during the closing stages of the second round. Rountree went on increasing the speed to the brink of breaking down the steering wheel with total concentration. Panting and sitting on the edge of the cage waiting for the bell to ring again, he looked exhausted by the time he reached the corner.

During the first two rounds, Rountree was closer to victory in the scorecards of the judges but Pereira did not look worried at all. The tide turned in the third round when Pereira started making clean shots that hurt Rountree. Rountree’s energy to begin with seemed to wane a bit as the fight continued and Pereira maintained the assault. Eventually, Pereira was a slow, calculated slow and steady approach to keep dominating Rountree and it was evident why Pereira is an unbreakable champion and not the kind of unrelenting power that Rountree wanted to take Pereira out in the initial rounds.

Rountree’s face started to puff out and still Pereira was not holding back. After that fight, Rountree posted on backstage photo with all the scrapes and bruises he had received in the fight against Pereira on Instagram and the post was shared by UFC CEO, Dana White.

“He had no fear from the first round,” White said. “Khalil Rountree went in there and started going at it the minute the bell rang. No fear, no jitters, no nerves. Maybe he had some jitters and nerves, if he did, he didn’t show it.

“He went right in against one of the baddest dudes of all time and just started mixing it up with him. It was awesome.”

Pereira chased his man like a lion and Rountree stepped out of the cage with minor injuries from the continuous pounding. And that’s what has been seen repeatedly by fans of Pereira – this is how UFC 307 is complete dominance.

To sum up, the victory reinforced the authority of the Uruguayan fighter, Pereira as the leading pound-for-pound sterling mixed martial artist in the UFC. Pereira who hinted that he may join the heavyweight division in the future said he is comfortable with staying in the light heavyweight division now. Whichever route he takes, one thing is for sure: So no matter where he plays, the opposition is going to find it hard to adopt to him.
