Anthony Joshua Seeks Sparring Revenge Against Daniel Dubois: 'My Chance to Get Him Back

Anthony Joshua Seeks Sparring Revenge Against Daniel Dubois: 'My Chance to Get Him Back

Muhammad Ali. Evander Holyfield. Lennox Lewis,  iconic fighters are part of an exclusive cadre of heavyweight champions who have triumphed three times in their careers.

Now it is the turn of Anthony Joshua to take his name among this exclusive list and he has the opportunity of doing it by beating another British fighter who believes he is the one destined to rule the boxing ring especially in the highest weight division. The atmosphere is tense and this fight is expected to go down a part of the annals of the history of heavyweight boxing.

Since he clinched the gold medal at the Olympics held in London in 2012, Anthony Joshua has become quite a superhero in British boxing. In particular, he wants to finish off his late career comeback by getting rid of Daniel Dubois, and reclaim his IBF title. This clash is planned to be held in London’s Wembley Stadium next Saturday with the approximate view of 96,000 people.

Considering the fact that Joshua has been selling out the largest venues in the country for several years now, this crowd seen one of the greatest turns out for any sporting event in Britain. I will be the first to admit that Joshua has grown quite comfortable with this situation. Of course, he did it at Wembley, when in 2017 he earned two belts of a world champion becoming after the KO of Wladimir Klitschko in an extraordinary bingo. Since Joshua is eyeing the old form in front of a noisy crowd, the expectation is high.

The heavyweight division would experience a drastic transformation if Dubois succeeds. To be able to secure such lucrative bouts against heavyweights such as Usyk or Tyson Fury, the emerging contender would thus entrench himself as the new force in the division. As WBA, WBC, and IBO heavyweight champions, Usyk and Joshua are expected to renew their rivalry on December 21, this time in Saudi Arabia.

“I’ve been to the well,” Joshua said. “Dan’s fighting someone who is willing to die in there.”

A loss would mean that Joshua (28-3, 25 KOs) has no other option than to relapse into boxing retirement or else endure the hard task of training and seeking a new start afresh. The pressure is perhaps rarely high when both fighters are on the precipice of either triumph or loss.

The Watford native, 34, faced a significant turning point in his career after losing to Oleksandr Usyk twice in a row after his startling loss to Andy Ruiz Jr. in 2019.

Consequently, Joshua altered his strategies, relocated his training to the United States of America, and severed his relationship with his original trainer. He realized it to the smaller but smarter Usyk that boxing is not just about power, force, and might but also about skill, wits and knowing the nuances of the boxing ring as much as the opponent.

Since his victory over Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius, Otto Wallin, and most recently, former UFC heavyweight champion, Joshua has been on the comeback trail of his life. His work has improved with every fight, and is now a more composed and tactical fighter in the ring.

“Everything I’ve done in the past, we have to draw a line (through) because I can’t take that with me on Saturday night,” Joshua said. “In that moment, that’s all that matters.”

I mean, add to that his stunning knockout power that is, even to this day, far from mediocre. Just try to make Ngannou, who was knocked out in the second round after a beautiful, accurately timed right hand that put him to sleep.

Dubois, known as “Dynamite,” said in an interview with The Associated Press this week that he intends to formally establish himself as the next world heavyweight champion through what would be the fight of his life. He only got the IBF belt at the end of June after Usyk decided to give it up in order not be an undisputed champion any longer.

“I need to show them on the night what I’m all about and then make the world respect me,” Dubois told the AP, “and make them put some respect to my name.”

Joshua’s punching effect is seen, and even at that, Dubois might still carry that cower from his 2020 first-round loss to another Brit Joe Joyce where he knocked down and counted out. Still people can recall that unfortunate day and it is a blemish on the record of Dubois.

While Joshua is far beyond that age, Dubois is convinced that his latest fight against Usyk in Wroclaw “transformed him from a boy to a man.” Meanwhile, Joshua said as much. Having not tasted defeat in the first six years of his boxing career, with three world championship titles, he quickly transformed into the darling of his nation, making his name synonymous with the l word; invincibility.

The disparity in pressure, preparation, and weight class is still apparent, though, as the saying goes, anything can happen at any given moment.
