In Malaysia at Sepang, Francesco Bagnaia reignited his MotoGP title charge and cut Jorge Martin’s lead in terms of points to a mere 24 points with one race remaining on the 2021 calendar.
Bagnaia outraced Martin who came to the second place and collectively his points rose to 485. Now Bagnaia is becoming closer with 461 points. Behind them, Enea Bastianini, Bagnaia’s Ducati teammate finished seven and something seconds behind Martin in third place. Not only are we going to witness a wet fortress at the Wankhede, in a weather that could be best described as on and off showers, but there will also be a spectacular finish to the title race!
The race at Sepang International Circuit continued for 19 laps, in ominous skies and high temperatures after a disastrous start. It was clear there was tension.
In the last lap, Polesitter Bagnaia changed what could have been the race-winning decision to the medium front tire to a soft one. The risk was worthwhile. The started the race into the first turn and he maintained the lead after a excellent start of the race.
It was a very interesting race, especially for the first three laps. Bagnaia and Martin overtook one another in turn, threatening to take the championship for a ride and pushing their bikes to the limit. Both strove till the very end of the race was over and could be declared a winner for there was no taker for quitting.
Bagnaia was able to get the better of Quartararo on lap four. Scoring a terrific start, he left Martin behind by enough latitude that he could not be overtaken again in the rest of the event.
Bagnaia was involved in an accident during Saturday’s sprint race but his win helped him keep the points in check and remain in the title hunt. His persistency in recovering set the premise for quite a battle in the last round.
"Managing the heat was the easiest part today, honestly," said Bagnaia, whose win was his 10th of the season. "Jorge was very aggressive. But our pace was too good and like always in the race on Sunday I can attack, I can be more aggressive. We just need to understand why on Saturday I'm struggling more to do the same."
The championship race is now headed to Barcelona for the final round of the season from November 15-17 and this time around, Martins will have to make his own destiny. The culminating was shifted from Valencia to Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona, where GP was removed following tragic floods in the Valencia area.
With Martin planning to clinch his first MotoGP title on virgin soil where the stakes are high than anywhere else, much more thrills has been ushered by this abrupt switch. As he struggles to clinch the title all eyes will be on him.
"I wanted to win, I wanted to be in the lead, but for sure Peco had the strategy. I completely understood his strategy, he was quite aggressive. We were making a good start for the first few laps, but then as soon as he overtook me, it was impossible to fight... We go to the final race, a big challenge, so let's try to do the best."
"Thanks to Bagnaia, because he's making this challenge more and more difficult," Martin said.
