Many of the members of Cavendish’s team lifted their wheels in honor as his last race in the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium kicked off. The people clapped when the famous sprinter announced the triumph for the last time. Cavendish marked a great career on Sunday by scoring a dramatic finish, after claiming the record of 35 stages in the Tour de France.
This makes the spectators make it even more special since Cavendish had announced earlier that this would be his last race only one day prior the race. To add excitement throughout the race, breakaways were made to suit Singapore’s hot and humid weather. But it could only be decided in the final 100 meters, which, well, as one would have foreseen. He was followed by Cavendish who was riding for Astana Qazaqstan breaking the finish line to thunderous cheers. In third place, Arnaud De Lie from Lotto Soudal team followed by Jasper Philipsen from Alpecin Deceuninck team. An incredible loud cheer went round the course as Cavendish did a perfect final cycle of his brilliant career making the atmosphere electric.
"I realised in the last 5 laps that it was the last 15km of my career and when I passed the flamme rouge for the last time in my career I felt that, but I was so on the limit – the heat here is not nice for me you know,” Cavendish said in a post-race interview, "What an incredible day to share my last race with those riders, with the future of sprinting, with this next generation of sprinters.”
To close the gap and by doing so to possibly arrive at the head of the breakaway before the showdown between the sprinters, the respective teams upped the pressure again. Since the tale was to be written and the happy ending was within the reach of a rider, this bicycle race would turn out to be none better than a pack gallop.
"I could see the laps counting down, I knew they were the last 25 laps of my career, that last 15 laps of my career, the last ten laps, the last three laps, last lap and then the last kilometre it was nice, I felt every bit of it," said Cavendish.
It was anything but a silent celebration, even if they were quite a distance apart. Cavendish’s victory that was celebrated by fans surrounded him was a perfect way of ending what was perhaps the best stage.
“I am very fortunate to have got to do what I love for so many years, and to see other people inspired by that and riding bikes themselves, Seeing how many people ride bikes now, seeing the growth of cycling in this country now and seeing how successful we’ve become at it… it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of that. It wonderful. You know, I’m just a lad from the Isle of Man, to be a Knight Commander, that’s not something I could ever have dreamed of.”
In response to a query concerning his future plans, Cavendish said: “I’m going to dinner and I’m going to have a few drinks with my teammates. I’m incredibly lucky to have a great group of boys here from Astana Qazaqstan with me – some friends as well as teammates – and I want to go and celebrate with the riders, with my friends, with my wife in Singapore.”
