Japan Wins First-Ever Gold in Wheelchair Rugby at Paris Paralympics After Hard-Fought Battle with US

Japan Wins First-Ever Gold in Wheelchair Rugby at Paris Paralympics After Hard-Fought Battle with US

Murderball never gives up.  As soon as a player receives the ball, the shot clock begins to tick down with no mercy, allowing them only 40 seconds to foil the defenders and throw the ball through the basket positioned at the opposite end of the court. However, wheelchair rugby, as the given sport is known today, is infamous for its sheer violence, so the task is far from being an easy one. The sound of wheelchairs colliding into one another can be heard, and it is a great reminder that wheelchair rugby is a very rough sport. Every play is a gamble and every single step, a challenge to strategy and tenacity.

The stage is thus set for the final showdown between the US and Japan, teams that will now engage each other in the final capturing the gold after four grueling day of intense games. The spectators, dressed in the national attires: stars and stripes intermingled with the rising sun, are passionate, and contribute to the electric atmosphere in the stadium. This young crowd is evidently thrilled by this thrilling match; their cheers show that they are fully involved with every passing moment of this decisive game. Each play has the potential to alter history and is a demonstration of patriotism and sporting ethos.

The stakes are high for both sides. The expectations are great for the US, a country that once lorded over the sport in its raw form in the 1970s and is now vying for gold since Beijing 2008. They were only able to win a bronze and three silvers after that achievement, and any narrow failure just fueled their anger and desire for redemption. On the other hand, Japan has its own story of desire and progress. It’s a breakthrough moment for a team that has been gaining steam since they clinched bronze in the two previous Games. There is now tension because both sides know that this game could define the kind of champions they were.

“Paris has really showed out for wheelchair rugby, it’s really impressive and heart-warming to see and really a reminder of the power and energy the Games have and the spirit it has,” he said. “It’s great to see the support for para sports."

Aoki, is in his fourth Paralympics as a co-captain in Paris. After the match he talked to reporters saying how the fans that filled the stadiums across Paris during the Games affected him deeply. Some of the exchanges were as intense as the spectators; the impact being felt in a lasting manner.

It is a mixed gender sport in which males have always played a pivotal role though tonight’s match witness fierce female competition on both halves. Stellar performer of the team, Sarah Adam, dashes across the field like a shooting star and the tries she sets are beyond the number that the Japanese team can handle. This is not a feat of a man but a woman; this stands testimony to the transformation that the game has undergone where determination has no gender.

Historical moment for the US Paralympic wheelchair rugby team as the first woman, Sarah Adam, will be participating in the game. The only time she comes off the field is extremely rare because she is always such a constant, dominating figure in the game. She has now made as many field goals as the US has attempted during the game every time the two sides go to half-time. The audience gets excited each time she sprints past the goal area, cradling the white ball between her legs. With such a performance, Adam brings to life the sport and makes her a trailblazer and force to be reckoned with.

“It’s been an electric atmosphere and a lot of fun to play in front of a crowd like this, so I'm really taking that home with me.” Adams told reporters, “I think it’s a really cool opportunity to have that platform and hopefully be able to reach other females that need to be in adaptive sports, and can benefit from being part of a community like I have had the opportunity to be.”

The game turns into what can be described as a war and reaches its climax almost hysteria when the Japanese team takes a more constructive performance in the second half. A contact sport requires forceful contact and thus players regularly tackle each other sending their rivals to the turf. Zooming into a brawl formation, wheelchairs aggressively collide with the sound of buttons spinning; challenging each other for domination around the matt-black wheels while fingers remain wrapped around them.

With every ounce of strength they possess, the US team starts to resist, but the Japanese are not to be trifled with. It’s stressful, every moment an experiment in power and patience. Japan’s lead has moved up to seven points by the sound of the final whistle. Their fans leap to their feet in jubilation, the noise enveloping them rising to a crescendo of triumph and they hug, overjoyed.

However, even at this time, he continues to remain strong regardless of the loss experience with the trusty. The idea of having to confront a home crowd that would be supporting the contender has him charged up for the next bout.

“I know that the US is going to show up and have an amazing Games. A lot of work to do on our end, we gotta really grind, but I’m excited about the possibility.” he said, “It gives me chills just thinking about it”

“I’ll take a little bit of time to relax, but we’re going for gold in LA,” he said.
