Canada has secured a spot in the FIBA World Cup men's semifinals for the first time in history, while Luka Doncic and Slovenia could potentially miss out on the Paris Olympics.
Just three days after securing their first Olympic berth since 2000, the Canadian men's basketball team achieved their best-ever result in World Cup history by defeating Slovenia 100-89.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who holds the title of All-NBA guard with the Oklahoma City Thunder, contributed 31 points in the quarterfinal triumph, while R.J. Barrett, a member of the New York Knicks, chipped in with 24 points in Manila.
Despite Luka Doncic's impressive 26-point performance, it fell short for Slovenia, which was also vying for a spot in the World Cup semifinals.
“Playing for the national team, it’s a lot of emotions. A lot of times I don’t control myself, which I’ve been having problems with. But the referees told one of the guys they’re not going to call a foul on him because he’s coming at us. I think this is not fair. I know I complained a lot, but I don’t think it’s fair. They’ve been playing very physical with me.” Doncic said. “I think everybody knows what my frustration was,”
The loss suffered by the Slovenian team resulted in Germany and Serbia securing spots at the 2024 Olympics as the top two European teams in the World Cup standings.
In the Friday semifinals, Canada will go up against Serbia, while the U.S. will take on Germany, which secured its spot in the World Cup semifinals by narrowly defeating Latvia earlier on Wednesday, marking its second semifinal appearance since 2002.
Slovenia, which achieved a fourth-place finish in its Olympic debut in Tokyo, with Doncic averaging 23.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 9.5 assists per game, will have a shot at qualifying for the Paris Games only if it emerges victorious in a final-chance tournament scheduled for next July.
This is how Slovenia secured its ticket to Tokyo, with Doncic registering a triple-double to defeat host Lithuania in a do-or-die qualifier, less than a month after his Dallas Mavericks were eliminated from the NBA playoffs.
