The 2025 event will include competitive online chess due to a groundbreaking multi-year partnership between the Esports World Cup Foundation and Chess.com. These are expected to rise when the biggest esports and gaming event in the world will be held in Riyadh again next summer.
Chess has always been widely considered as a game of-wits, and has a global player base of over 600 million. Continuing its growth and providing education to around 200 million players, Chess.com is recognized as chess platform. Yet another major achievement in the cooperation is Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, who agreed to become the Chess.com’s global ambassador during the Esports World Cup.
Among those who wanted to become the member of EWC championship, the main way to perform and get in the prestigious event will be through the Champions Chess Tour – a series of rapid and blitz events organized by Chess.com as part of the new partnership. Prepare yourselves for the newest infusion to the growing world of esports!
February 2025 and May 2025 will have two interesting online tour events, so the pressure will be higher than ever. In this way, players will be able to show on the biggest esports platform in the world, fight for global recognition and most importantly for the win, and for three hundred thousand dollars.
“It’s the perfect example of how games evolve: from boards to screens, the core competition stays the same. Chess’ rich history, global appeal, and thriving competitive scene make it a perfect fit for our mission to unite the world’s most popular games and their passionate communities under one competitive umbrella.” stated the Esports World Cup Foundation's CEO, Ralf Reichert.
“Bringing chess, a game that has been played for 1,500 years, to the Esports World Cup is a truly exciting moment.”
Carlsen expressed his excitement, stating he was absolutely thrilled to witness chess make its debut alongside some of the biggest games in the world at the Esports World Cup. “This partnership is an incredible opportunity to grow the game, by introducing chess to new audiences and inspiring the next generation of players. Being part of the esports family is an amazing opportunity for chess to broaden its reach to a massive group of esports fans.”
The best 12 CCT players will get the very prestigious invitation to participate in EWC Chess, which will be arranged in Riyadh at the 31.07-03.08.2025. It will not remain a contest up to this point, anyway. The other four will be contested in the Last Chance Qualifier in Riyadh that will be open to both amateur and professional competitors. In addition to the chance at harvesting thousands of Esports World Cup Club Championship points that could revolutionise their lives, they will all fight for a share of the massive $1.5 million pot.
Chess gradually migrated its community to the internet around the late 90s, but really began its boom in the 2010s thanks to pioneers such as Chess.com. However, COVID, new streaming services, influencers, and popular games like The Queen’s Gambit only continued this and made chess well-known as an online sport.
This week will conclude the 2024 tour with eight competitors remaining to compete for the $500,000 main award out of the $1.7 million overall season amount. Thus there will be likely to be stiff competition for the final cash payout.
