Chiefs Hold Off Ravens in Dramatic Finish: Likely's Last-Second Touchdown Overturned After Toe Out of Bounds

Chiefs Hold Off Ravens in Dramatic Finish: Likely's Last-Second Touchdown Overturned After Toe Out of Bounds

KANSAS CITY—The disparity that determined Baltimore’s loss was a mere inches and a foot.

Wide receiver Isaiah Likely acted like he caught the game-winning touchdown just as the time ran out. But the play was declared no good because his right toe was only on the bare surface of the end zone paint. Kansas City just scraped through and won 27–20 in a very close game.

Another touchdown resulted in a spectacular finish to a rematch of the prior AFC championship game were the Ravens and the Chiefs play in Baltimore and win with the same final play.

Following Ravens QB Lamar Jackson’s near-interceptions on two red-zone throws each to Isaiah Likely and Zay Flowers, the big play was a third-down heave from the 10. In the first throw, their grip slipped, and it repeated in the second one to make way for the climactic final heave.

Kansas City had its share of bright spots, most notably rookie receiver Xavier Worthy. Worthy was instrumental in the Chiefs' triumph with two explosive touchdowns: They fumbled several key plays, such as a 21 yard end-around and a 35 yard pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“We’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to get better at, but that’s a great start,” Mahomes said.

What the Chiefs accomplished in their first-round victory is something that the previous two Super Bowl winners couldn’t pull off. Last year, Kansas City lost in the season opener to Detroit, while in the 2022 game, the Rams was deported by Buffalo.

The Chiefs now have their eyes set on an even more ambitious objective: thus making them the first team in NFL history to achieve a three peat in Super Bowl wins.

The first touchdown for Baltimore was made by someone who didn’t used to play for the team. New pickup Derrick Henry registered his first touchdown in a Ravens uniform, a five-yard burst up the middle. Furthermore, the former Titans player made history when he scored the first touchdown of the 2024 campaign.

Most fans and analysts were eager to see the clash of titans between Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, the two MVP players.

Once again to the tune of 100+ yards, Jackson rushed for a game-high yardage of 122 yards to tantalize the field and remain one of the league’s premier talents.

Subsequently, the match got underway after a 25-minute rain interruption, with people dashing to the overhangs for shelter. But as the clouds rolled away, night had turned into a rather splendid evening and this set the stage for further action.

Baltimore made two critical mistakes in the second quarter – a strip sack and a failed fourth down – which Kansas City capitalized on. These opportunities were capitalized on by the Chiefs, currently leading by six points which include two field goals made by Harrison Butker. But the Ravens replied before the half time. Baltimore then cut the margin with a field goal of their own after Mahomes was intercepted.
