For the sixth year in a row, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to compete for the chance to be the AFC representative in the Super Bowl.
A remarkable performance by the Chiefs' offense and a stroke of luck, they secured a 27-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium. This win propels them to a upcoming matchup against the Baltimore Ravens next week, with the opportunity to advance to the Super Bowl.
Heading into the divisional round on Sunday, the Bills aimed to rely on their offense as a key defensive strategy. This approach proved effective, with Buffalo dominating the time of possession (37:03 to 22:57) and restricting quarterback Patrick Mahomes' playing time. Despite these efforts, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense, led by No. 15, demonstrated their resilience and stepped up when it mattered most.
Despite having just 47 offensive plays compared to the Bills' 78, the Chiefs managed to accumulate 361 total yards, only seven fewer than Buffalo. Additionally, Mahomes completed 17-of-23 passes for 215 yards, delivering two second-half touchdowns, both to tight end Travis Kelce.
Meanwhile, in the Chiefs' rematch with the Bills, running back Isiah Pacheco, who was absent in their previous encounter, made a significant impact by rushing for 97 yards on 15 carries. He sealed the game with a four-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass brought back recollections of Scott Norwood, who became infamous for denying the franchise Super Bowl XXV by erring wide right on a 44-yard field goal attempt that could have equalized the game with 1:47 remaining. Despite being a critical moment, the game had already started slipping away from the Bills well before that point.
The Bills had run seven plays in the fourth quarter, gaining only five yards over two possessions. These included a puzzling failed fake punt attempt on fourth down and a subsequent three-and-out.
On the flip side, had it not been for a fumble by the Chiefs at the goal line early in the fourth quarter, the Bills would have faced a two-score deficit to overcome, not just three points. Additionally, during the 16-play drive that led to Bass' missed field goal, quarterback Josh Allen narrowly escaped a lost fumble that could have spelled the end.
While Bass doesn't escape all blame, the heart of the Bills' defeat lies in the offense's crunch-time challenges and Stefon Diggs' near-invisible performance (three catches for 21 yards).
Sunday's showdown reached a thrilling conclusion, yet it didn't need to unfold that way. In the final moments, Reid's choices had the potential to come back and haunt the Chiefs.
Reid adeptly adapted to the Bills' strategy throughout the majority of the game, but he teetered on the brink of jeopardizing the lead in the second half. After the Bills' unsuccessful fake punt, the Chiefs found themselves in prime position in Buffalo's territory, holding a three-point lead with 12:49 remaining.
