The Chicago Cubs edged the Miami Marlins 2-1 at LoanDepot Park on May 22, reaching the 30-win milestone for the 2025 MLB season and maintaining their lead in the National League Central Division.
The Cubs struck early in the first inning when Kyle Tucker launched his 12th home run of the year to give Chicago a 1-0 lead. But the Marlins responded quickly. Cubs starter Cade Horton found himself in trouble after allowing a hit and a walk, leading to a bases-loaded situation with two outs. Connor Norby then delivered a clutch RBI single to even the score at 1-1.
Both teams struggled to generate sustained offense through the middle innings, and the game remained tied into the late stages.
The breakthrough came in the top of the eighth. After Matt Shaw drew a leadoff walk, he advanced to second on a foul fly. Kyle Tucker followed with a single to left field, and a defensive miscue by the Marlins allowed Shaw to race home and score the go-ahead run.
The Cubs bullpen preserved the lead, and Chicago walked away with a hard-fought 2-1 win, improving their record to 30-20 and strengthening their position at the top of the NL Central.
Seiya Suzuki, batting third and playing right field, continued his recent surge at the plate. He led off the sixth inning with a single, finishing 1-for-4 on the day and extending his hitting streak to three games. Suzuki is now batting .253 for the season.
