Dallas Mavericks, Western Conference Champions, Dominate Timberwolves in Game 5, Marching into Majestic NBA Finals

Dallas Mavericks, Western Conference Champions, Dominate Timberwolves in Game 5, Marching into Majestic NBA Finals

Doncic took the charge of the game early and scored 20 points out of 8 field attempts in the first quarter alone, making it 35-19 in the favor of the Mavericks. In the second quarter, Kyrie Irving, regained the form and the momentum of the Mavericks began to build up from then on. Altogether, at the halftime they had a good lead of 69/40.

“He let his teammates know that it’s time and they’ve got to take it up a notch,” coach Jason Kidd said. “He sent the invites out, and they all came.”

Karl-Anthony Towns put in 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who gave up the third seed, and Anthony Edwards chipped in a team-high 28 points. Two talented point guards from two opposing teams were Doncic and Irving, and no matter what they could do, they were unable to slow down this unstoppable force. The Timberwolves had moved past the reigning NBA champion Denver in a six-game series and had dismantled the Phoenix in the first round 4-0 but they could not overcome the high-powered offence of Dallas.

“We never clicked all together as a team in this series, not even one game,” Edwards said. “The last two series, we were all clicking at one time, making shots and stuff. It wasn’t clicking at one time here.”

Even though the Timberwolves tried to make a comeback in the third quarter by cutting the lead, the Mavericks quickly extinguished their hope in the last quarter to secure the win.

Evidently, the result was somewhat expected, but few could have thought that Dallas would reign so overwhelmingly. At their best, the Mavericks would have a 36-point lead, and for Minnesota their best would only allow them a two-point lead.

With a scorching 54. A field goal shooting average of 8% and a free throw conversion rate of 44. 1% from beyond the arc, Dallas was lethal. Minnesota, on the other hand, was very, very bad, sinking only 31. 3 percent from beyond the arc and only 42. 7% overall.

Dallas had Doncic and Irving score 36 points each. Doncic was sharp as he converted 14 out of 22 shots, the same as Irving scored 14 out of 27 shots. P. J. First, Washington, and Daniel Gafford both had substantial double-digit contributions.

While Towns and Edwards both put up 28 points each, no other Minnesota players could provide more help. This was evident in the fact that no other Timberwolves player was able to get into double figures.
