Verstappen Secures Third Consecutive Canadian Grand Prix Victory, Fends off Norris Challenge

Verstappen Secures Third Consecutive Canadian Grand Prix Victory, Fends off Norris Challenge

On the eleventh lap, Verstappen took a strong lead after a function of safety-car, which he managed well. Mercedes’ George Russell and Lewis Hamilton where behind McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen was in a league of his own by leading the entire race from the starting line itself and increasing the margin to over two seconds in a single lap.

“It was a pretty crazy race,” The current world champion leaped out of his RB20 and said with excitement. "A lot of things were happening and we had to be on top of our calls. I think as a team we just did really well today – we remained calm, I think we pitted at the right time.

“Of course the Safety Car worked out nicely for us, but even after that I think we were managing the gaps quite well. I love it, that was a lot of fun. Those kinds of races, you need them once in a while.”

On two previous occasions, Norris had assumed the lead of the event, masterfully navigating the conditions that changed between wet and dry. And each time he pitted later than Verstappen, he came out in the back. When it counts most, Norris was unable to keep up with the pace of the world champion despite his best endeavors in the last laps, coming second.

In the final stages of the race, moving to the last lap, Russell, who had started the race as a leader, was engaged in a thrilling overtaking of Hamilton and overtook him, leaving the last step of the podium. Russell, however, was not fully happy with this achievement as he named some critical incidents that spoiled his run in the race, which was his first pole position start in nearly two years. Although Hamilton tried to overtake his own teammate he could only finish the race in the fourth place. Piastri to finish fifth in his rookie year while proving to be very reliable. In the meantime, Fernando Alonso, who was driving for Aston Martin, managed only sixth, but he didn’t give up.

It was Verstappen’s sixth win in nine grands-prix this year, and the Dutch driver extended his lead over Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to 56 points. But poor showing by the Italian team ended up having both of their cars pull out of the race and this extended the margin significantly, to the detriment of Ferrari.

Even after Verstappen won the race, it was far from a guarantee to reach its conclusion. To be specific, this grand prix had several twists and turns, which can hardly be compared to the outcomes of the other grands prix of this season. The victory of the team along with Verstappen being adaptive to changes in weather also gives credence to his skills as a driver. From the analysis of the race dynamics it is clear that even a strong driver like Max Verstappen cannot afford to be complacent and relax in such fierce and highly competitive setting.

Starting the final 11 laps with high tension, Mercedes had pitted both Russell and Hamilton for fresh tires during the safety car period and now it just had only 10 laps of tire advantage over Verstappen and the McLarens ahead.

Seeing an opportunity, Russell began to apply pressure on the McLarens with Norris and Piastri shadowing Verstappen who was already in the distance. Russell just became greedy and attempted to overtake Piastri in the last chicane when it looked like he was preparing to do so. He lost valuable time and the precious drive as this move placed him in the run-off area.

Hamilton went past Piastri very quickly and was prepared to overtake again after Russell made that mistake. Hamilton seemed to have the opportunity to capitalize on his teammate’s error for the next one minute.

Russell did not stop there yet. Russell was able to out qualify Piastri and later Hamilton with the help of his medium tires while he was struggling his way back. Thus, the latter circuits had an extra spice of the toing and froing, which showed just how much of a fight the race was.

There are still a lot of races left and the European part of the Formula 1 season starts in two weeks in Barcelona with the Spanish GP. Then the action moves to Austria in front of the much anticipated British Grand Prix set for Silverstone on July, 5th to 7th.
