Djokovic Secures First Olympic Gold, Outlasting Alcaraz in Thrilling Final

Even though he has consistently triumphed in various Grand Slam events, the world championships in tennis, and topped the rankings for quite a while, one thing that was missing in Djokovic’s trophy collection was the Olympic gold for Serbia. Finally, at the 2024 Games in an enthralling men’s tennis, singles final on Sunday this deal signed at the age of 37. I think both sets were very close as Djokovic narrowly edged Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets 7-6(3) 7-6(2). The spectacular performance and dramatic conjunction of the two participants during the fight was truly a record, reflecting their extraordinary talent and endurance.

Therefore, wait time is senseless in a given fashion. As of now, Djokovic remains the Olympic champion and this is for the title that will stand for a long time. In another way, however, the years of wait and the failures experienced made the feelings of triumph not mere thankfulness but rather thankfulness beyond measure. It is for this reason that tears were rolling down his face while his hands were shaking when he was kneeling on the red clay of the Court Philippe Chatrier.

“When I take everything into consideration, this probably is the biggest sporting success I ever had in my career,” said Djokovic, who didn’t drop a set in Paris and is the oldest man to win the Summer Games tennis title since 1908. “This kind of supersedes everything that I imagined, that I hoped that I could experience, that I could feel.”

When it finally came close and when it seemed that every single shot can make or mar the victory, Djokovic stood his ground because the stakes were high and close. Previously, he had been defeated by Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final three weeks prior, yet he dominated both tiebreaks against her. The tightness of the fight showed the character and cunning of the victor proving that Djokovic can cope with the pressure.

“In the close moments, in the difficult situations, in the tiebreaks, he played an impressive game,” said silver medalist Alcaraz, the 21-year-old from Spain who sobbed, too, after falling short of becoming the youngest male singles gold medalist. “That’s why I saw that he’s hungry for the gold medal. He was going to go for it.”

A six-time Australian Open winner, Djokovic has total of 24 Grand Slam titles on his tally that makes him superior in terms of the number of weeks he has spent as world number one male or female tennis player. Despite the fact that he received an Olympics medal in 2008, he never expected a bronze one to make it. In the past few days, weeks and even months, he has not been shy to comment.

In Paris two months after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair a torn meniscus to Djokovic’s face the tennis player Nadal in the second round in straight sets. He had a gray sleeve over his knee.

The two-and-a-half-hour final was a masterclass in tennis. This epic match pitted one of the greatest players of all time, Djokovic, against Alcaraz, whom he called "the highest mountain to climb at the moment." Djokovic's enduring brilliance and resilience were tested against Alcaraz's mounting challenge.

“We both played at a very high level,” Djokovic said. “We really went toe-to-toe.”

The fact that the Grand Slam tournaments use a best-of-five format, while the Olympics use a best-of-three format, disappointed both fans and Alcaraz. Fans became an essential part of the show, and this abbreviated format left them wanting more. The stands echoed with repeated cries of "No-le! Not at all!" and "Car-los! Car-los!composing a backup symphony. With great anticipation for a resurgence, Alcaraz's supporters said, "Si, se puede!"You sure you can!"

But in between, people were all quiet, almost a silent theatre, and it was very clear that there was tension. Above the noisy tussle, a child let out a cry to pause the game.

Just in the first set, for more than an hour and a half, stunning strokes and game prolongation were seen. One point to an eighteen-point game took twelve minutes of the match’s interest and concluded with the sudden-death point. And then when he got the final four points of the match he threw his racket up into the air and looked up into the guest box at his wife, two kids, and other tennis personnel.

The second rally of the third set had arguably been the best with Djokovic ending a 10-shot volley with a perfect cross-court backhand while in form of movement to lead 3-2. He was driven by the shouts and clapping of the audience, and complemented them with gestures of appreciation. He was to clinch his long-awaited triumph in a rather dramatic fashion by scoring a final and decisive forehand.

With the gold medal in hand he bent down, took the medal and kissed it as the Serbian national anthem played in the background, constantly fears that this time will never happen?

“There are always doubts. Absolutely, I had doubts,” Djokovic said. “But the belief and the conviction that I can make it is stronger than my doubts. It always has been. I knew that it’s going to happen. It was just a matter of when it’s going to happen.”
