Dolphins Crush Broncos 70-20, Setting NFL Record Since 1966

Dolphins Crush Broncos 70-20, Setting NFL Record Since 1966

During Week 3's disheartening away game against the Miami Dolphins, the Denver Broncos found themselves setting an unfortunate record when, with 9:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, backup quarterback Mike White connected with Robbie Chosen for a 68-yard touchdown.

The extra point pushed the Dolphins to a 63-13 lead, setting a new record for the highest number of points the Broncos have ever conceded, surpassing the previous high of 59 points allowed on two occasions in the team's history.

In their following possession, the Dolphins saw running back Devon Achane sprint for a 67-yard touchdown, with the extra point extending Miami's total to 70 points.

The highest-scoring NFL regular-season game on record occurred in 1966 when Washington defeated the New York Giants 72-41, and as I write this, there are still 8:01 left in the fourth quarter.

The Dolphins had the opportunity to break the all-time record on Sunday against the Broncos. However, in a sportsmanlike decision, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel chose to kneel on the ball with 30 seconds remaining, despite his team being within field goal range and just three points away from the all-time record.

"This doesn't compare to anything that I've seen or been a part of," Tagovailoa said. "It just talks about the resilience of our team. Although we were up going into halftime, I'm very proud of the guys and the way they continued to play. No one took their foot off the gas, everyone continued to play and that's the result that we got."

It's difficult to imagine Broncos head coach Sean Payton retaining defensive coordinator Vance Joseph after the team has allowed 122 points in only eight quarters under his supervision, and this is just after three games.

"That's a lot of players executing a lot of things to a standard that's unrelenting," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. "When you have a lead -- so many leads are vulnerable in this league. So we'd talked at length all offseason just about adversity and sometimes adversity is having a two-score lead, because you can let the atmosphere dictate your product. So what I saw from a lot of guys ... that's guys really taking it to heart that we have one [opportunity] with this team in 2023, and we're going to make the most of it and be unrelenting with our standards.

Miami, having achieved a 3-0 start for two consecutive seasons under McDaniel's leadership, will carry its unbeaten record into a Week 4 AFC East matchup against the Bills in Buffalo.
