Japan's Women's Fencing Team Makes History with First Team Foil Medal at Paris Olympics

Japan's Women's Fencing Team Makes History with First Team Foil Medal at Paris Olympics

Japan won their first Olympic medal in this category at Paris Games on Thursday when they triumphed in a tense fight at the foil fencing team event to beat Canada and win the bronze medal.

In the finals which took place in France’s Grand Palais the team of Yuka Ueno, Komaki Kikuchi, Sera Azuma and Karin Miyawaki triumphed over the Canadians with only 33-32 difference. Japan’s fencers have lifted their achievements at these Games with this win following Koki Kano gold in the men’s foil event.

"I couldn't perform the way I wanted to in the individual foil competition," said Ueno, who was eliminated in second round of the women's individual foil. "So I was determined to get a medal in the team event no matter what. I gave it everything I had."

In the match against Italy, the United States team emerged victorious with a score of 45-39, and thereby clinched the gold medal.

In the competing stage of the quarterfinals, Japan had prevailed over Poland 45–30 but fell to Italy 45–39 in the semis.

Into the fifth round, the battle was fairly closely contested but the Japanese were beginning to edge the fight. The teenager, Yunjia Zhang, started the bout against Yuka Ueno where the latter emerged victorious 5-1 thus getting her team five points.

In the next three games of the competition, Japan scored only two points and had a three-point lead for 22-year-old swimmer Yuka Ueno that she would have to defend in the championship round.

This unleashed another wave of hostility and with only 49 seconds on the clock, the margin was cut to only one point. Ueno never gave in and defended right until the final bell to conclude the game. She removed her mask triumphantly after the game and together with her team started celebrating their victory of having won the medals.

"I couldn't get a medal in Tokyo (at the Olympics in 2021) so I am happy I have finally got one here," said Azuma. "I was able to put (elimination in) the individual event behind me and ready myself for battle today."
