Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Dustin May is scheduled to undergo surgery on July 18 to repair the flexor tendon in his throwing elbow, according to an announcement made by the team on Tuesday. While the Dodgers did not provide a specific timeline for his recovery, it is anticipated that May will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 season. This comes as a disappointing blow for May, who has been on the injured list since May with a flexor-pronator strain that failed to heal as expected.

May, who previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021, has endured a challenging stretch with injuries, limiting his playing time over the past three seasons. With the likelihood of missing the entire 2023 season, May's total innings pitched in the last three years will amount to a mere 101 innings. Despite his injury setbacks, the 25-year-old pitcher has showcased his talent and potential when healthy, maintaining an impressive career 3.10 ERA and a 3.05 K/BB ratio over 191 2/3 innings pitched in the major leagues. However, his ongoing battle with injuries continues to pose challenges to his career progression.

Shortly after the announcement regarding Dustin May's surgery, the Los Angeles Dodgers faced another setback as veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw was placed on the injured list due to a sore shoulder. This comes at a time when the Dodgers are already dealing with the absence of Walker Buehler, who underwent Tommy John surgery in the previous year, and Noah Syndergaard, who is currently sidelined with blister problems. The mounting injuries to key pitchers pose significant challenges for the Dodgers as they navigate the season.
