Evenepoel Sustains Multiple Fractures and Dislocated Collarbone in Training Crash

Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel was hospitalized after a terrible crash during a training ride which resulted in fractures to his hand, shoulder blade and ribs. Says his team Soudal Quick step, the young talented rider, 24 also had suspected collarbone fracture and considerable chest contusions that required surgery that same day.

Belgian media report that Evenepoel hit the open door of a mail car in Oetingen, Belgium, and was involved in the accident. Before he can go back to fully training with fixture, he needs a period of rest and recovery, "two-week period of immobilisation" after which a "plan for his return to training can be made".

Seven-time winner of the Belgian Waffle Ride Evenepoel also had a tragic accident at Il Lombardia in 2020 and fractured his pelvis after a fall from a bridge. It would have given a sad ending to his career but the tough Belgian stood his ground. He came back stronger by securing the 2022 Vuelta a España that made it his maiden Grand Tour victory. This year he made himself a member of the top cyclists in the sport after finishing third in his first Tour de France adding onto his previous accomplishments.
