F1 Shakes Up Monaco: Mandatory Two-Stop Rule Set for 2025 Grand Prix

F1 Shakes Up Monaco: Mandatory Two-Stop Rule Set for 2025 Grand Prix

In 2025, Formula 1 will implement an obligatory two-stop strategy for the Monaco Grand Prix, adding a new wrinkle to the competitive event. However, what does this regulation change actually mean? What sanctions will teams be subject to for noncompliance? How is the shake-up affecting the drivers?

In dry races, F1 regulations usually only demand drivers to use two or more distinct slick tire compounds, which is a requirement that teams frequently fulfill with a single pit stop. This regulation, however, is nullified when it starts to rain on the track, enabling teams to freely transition between intermediates and fully wet tires as necessary.

A new twist has been added to this year's Monaco Grand Prix: drivers will have to use at least three separate tire sets, which essentially means they must make at least two pit stops. No more speeding by with a single, strategically placed adjustment.

The objective? to break the cadence of a race known for its processional style. The Grand Prix, which is held on the harsh, winding streets of Monte Carlo, where passing is more of a pipe dream than a reality, frequently comes down to track position and strategy. Officials intend to inject a degree of unpredictability and excitement to one of Formula 1's most recognizable yet tactically conservative races by requiring multiple tire changes.

Drivers will still need to meet the new two-stop rule if it rains on Sunday, but they will be permitted to ride through any mix of slicks, intermediates, and full wets to do so.

The rule will be enforced even if downpour conditions necessitate the usage of severe wet tires throughout the race by providing each driver with an additional set of full wet tires, in addition to the standard two-tyre allocation.

In accordance with Formula 1's regular dry-weather regulation, drivers will still be required to run at least two different slick tire compounds during the race assuming the sky remain clear and the circuit stays dry.

What about the grid's response? overwhelmingly positive. The majority of today's top drivers accepted the new regulation when pressed by the media. Max Verstappen, the current four-time world champion, even alluded to the possibility of a more exciting race, saying it might bring some much-needed "spice" to the Monaco show.

“I think it will spice it up probably a bit more. Normally, when you have that one-stop, once you have a good pit stop and everything is fine then you drive to the end, and you just have to stay focused and not hit the barrier.”

“Maybe with the two-stop it can create something different, people gambling, guessing when the right time is to box, and hopefully it will spice it up a bit more.”

“At the end of the day, I’m not too sure everybody knows what this is going to do – it might actually not change much. I think what remains extremely important is Qualifying, so you know if you get it right in quali at least you do a big part of the job.”

“I’m sure it’s going to open up some potential strategy, which we’ll have to be on top of.”

“I guess it can go both ways, where it can be quite straightforward or it can go completely crazy because of Safety Cars coming into play or not, making the right calls,” the World Champion Max Verstappen said.
