New York Yankees 3, Los Angeles Dodgers 6. There were fifty two thousand, three hundred and ninety four, people at their feets when Freeman potentiated the stadium as he circled the bases. After the team won and the crowd burst into applause, he headed for the sideliners to meet his father. Freeman was also pleased to see that the spectators as well were excited and one of the evidences he noted was obvious.
“I just screamed in his face," Freeman said. “It was my Dad’s moment too."
Shohei Ohtani took a pitch that was fly to left field and it seemed like the Dodgers had run out of chances. The runners moved to the second and third bases after making an incredible jumping catch with the fans cheering when outfielder Alex Verdugo fell over the railing.
In trying to set up a potential confrontation by the plate with Freeman, Yankees manager Aaron Boone strolled to the mound and signaled to lefty Nestor Cortes to intentionally on purpose Mookie Betts.
It went into the right field bleachers for a tremendous grand slam as Freeman crushed a 92-mph fastball by Cortes and texted the baseball for 423 feet behind him.
There will be a good amount of confusion for the Dodgers even now. They escaped a questionable crowd interference call, a Giancarlo Stanton’s home run, and were blanked for the most part by Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole.
Yet here they were, happily congratulating themselves, skipping in the infield, and swarming around Freeman. By the time Hurd stepped on short and failed to catch a popup, Longhorn capitalized on the misfortune to clinch the victory.
A particular highlight occurred in the fifth inning when Juan Soto, the Yankees’ right fielder failed to read the bounce of a firm line drive shot by Enrique Hernandez, which should have been a double; instead was a triple. The Yankees regretted that error almost instantly, as Will Smith – who was promoted as the father of a newborn baby girl only days ago – sent a sacrifice bunt to send home a run, making it 1-0 for the Dodgers.
Yankees were now leading 2-1 and in the eighth inning Shohei Ohtani came with a good strike hitting of ball to the right-center-field wall, a double. Perhaps New York could have handled it but everything began falling very quickly. That Soto hit the ball back to the pitcher like a bullet was not ideal – frantically, the ball bounced off Gleyber Torres’ glove – and into what we fondly call the nether region of the field. Fortunately for Ohtani, no-one was near the ball to pick it up and as a result he ran to third base without provoking further.
The World Series proceeded to frames where neither team could score the winning run in nine innings. But the Yankees did little resting up. Jazz Chisholm Jr home run after Tommy Edman threw a routine ground ball which making the score 3-2 in New York. Blake Treinen then hit Austin Wells to get out of the inning.
The Dodgers won 6-3, and the ballpark was in a frenzy as Freeman hit the first pitch, a four-seam fastball with a walk-off grand slam to right field in World Series history.
Saturday’s match between the Dodgers and the Yankees will probably be another close encounter. The Yankees’ expected starting pitcher is Carlos Rodón, who is serving a postseason average of 4.40 ERA. Rodón will face first-time postseason hitter Yoshinobu Yamamoto who has matched Rodón’s performance with a 4.40 ERA in his three postseason starts for the Dodgers.
This is a crucial game for either team to gain momentum in the series because, although both pitchers have displayed moments of greatness, their inconsistency has occasionally been their downfall.
