Georgia Stuns Portugal with 2-0 Victory, Secures Spot in Euro 2024 Round of 16

Georgia stunned Portugal on Wednesday with the most stunning upset in Euro history beating the latter 2-0. Thus, thanks to the goals in the first half of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the next penalty kick converted by Georges Mikautadze, they proceed to the second round of their evaluation in their first major competition.

Since Portugal was through to the next round anyway, they played a half-decent team, but for Georgia this was sweetest moment since gaining independence in 1991.

Georgian supporters celebrated it in tens of thousands which watched the match which is regarded more than a coup on the basis of the FIFA ratings (with Georgia being only in the 74th position) not to mention the fact that the rivals were the 2016 European champions, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal with the overall rating of the team – the sixth place in the world.

Georgia plotted a convoluted route to Germany after a less than impressive fourth place in the qualifier. They had been champions of the less recognized Euro Nations tournament having first emerged the group champions and then they went on to defeat the Greek team in the playoff match.

Led by the club’s young coach Willy Sagnol, a former France and Bayern Munich defender, the team achieved a fully deserved third place in a very tough group F. These achievements popularised the fixture with a 3-time European champions Spain in the round of 16.

Spain definitely has the upper hand over Georgia since when these two nations’ football teams met on a recently concluded match in the qualifications in Tbilisi in September, Spain thrashed Georgia 7 – 1. Sagnol however was composed, looked charged up and seemed unfazed by the tough test in front of him.

"When you are the small team of the competition… you know you have nothing to lose…You have no weight on your shoulders," Sagnol told reporters. "Today I don't have a lot of words. I feel very proud to be their manager."

A change in the arrange of the round of sixteen was prompted by Georgia’s qualification this rearranged the match pairings to Portugal and Slovenia, Romania and Netherlands, and England and Slovakia. Nonetheless, Hungary was just unable to push through despite the team’s best efforts.

A new comer to the tournament, got off to a good start. The first goal of the match was scored by Kvaratskhelia who navigated himself past Portuguese defenders after a through ball by Antonio Silva at 93 seconds and after leaving the opponent’s goalie, Diogo Costa, rooted, he fired home with a low drive.

Just Ronaldo and two other players who featured in the Portuguese’s 3-0 thrashing of Turkey at the weekend were seen to be struggling hard to win every ball. He intended to be the oldest goal scorer in the entire history of the European tournament at the age of 39.

But Georgia’s defense was made impenetrable. Opportunists: there is nothing more dangerous than an opponent with his back to the wall, and so they waited for opportunities to strike back with a passion as if it is chalice vs. chalice. Antonio Silva who has made an earlier mistake of fouls committed a foul in the box in the 53rd minute. Getting back from VAR inspection, a penalty was given.

Georges Mikautadze then, after setting-up Kvaratskhelia to score the first goal and calmly ‘slotting’ the ball into the bottom corner of the penalty area after beating Diogo Costa. This one put him at a three goal advantage for becoming the leading scorer of the Euro 2024.

Ronaldo who seemed to be angered ft after he was given a yellow card for protesting the referee. When he was substituted after the break his temper provoking him to kicking a water bottle in frustration. This was a historical moment in his crying career because it was the time the superstar did not make a goal during the group stage of a tournament.

Coach of the Portugal’s team Roberto Martinez agreed with this, stating that his team could not manage to play with the same passion and tenet as the opponents.

"We didn't underestimate Georgia, but Georgia were playing the game of their history … and we were playing the last game when we were already top of the group," he said.
