Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Controversy: ‘Tank’ Knee No-Call Sparks Outrage in Boxing Community

Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Controversy: ‘Tank’ Knee No-Call Sparks Outrage in Boxing Community

Saturday night's bout between WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis and the resolute underdog Lamont Roach Jr. was decided by a highly controversial non-knockdown decision. Roach beat the odds and forced the fight to a majority draw, which, although not a true victory, was a monument to his tenacity in a contest where the odds were stacked firmly in favor of Davis.

Due to Davis's exceptionally calm style of fighting, Roach was able to control a large portion of the action and outlast him over the course of 12 exhausting rounds. The fight remained extremely close, though, because Davis continued to have a little advantage in power punches.

Round 9 when Roach delivered a slashing blow that propelled Davis forward before he suddenly fell to his knees and headed to the corner, where his staff attended to him. Many people in the arena and watching at home were shocked by the referee's decision to dismiss the moment as incidental, even though the sequence suggested a knockout.

For the most part, Davis fought in a calm, even hesitating manner, which has occasionally been seen in his career. Before launching devastating counterattacks to end the match, he usually takes his time and observes his opponent's habits. During the course of 12 rounds, Roach continuously outpaced him in total punches and matched his tempo, refusing to allow him get into that routine.

Roach more than held his own when the fighting heated up and both fighters exchanged blows. He was frequently the one throwing the more powerful power punches, so every exchange felt like a statement rather than just reacting to Davis' attacks.

When Roach made a clean contact, Davis chose to drop to one knee and retire to his corner, where he was promptly cleaned out by his team. The referee chose not to declare the sequence a knockdown even though it was obviously the result of a landed strike; this decision eventually determined the fight's outcome and left viewers wondering what might have happened.

Grease got into his eye, Davis said, justifying his decision to take a knee. But according to boxing rules, it is a knockdown if you fall to your knees after being punched. However, Davis appeared annoyed, as though the controversy had taken him by surprise, when the audience let out loud jeers to express their displeasure.

"The shit was like when you're sweating and shit like that," Davis said as the crowd booed after the fight. "Why are you booing like I'm saying bullshit? This is real shit."

The final scorecards after 12 hard rounds showed a majority draw with Davis scoring 115-113 and the other two judges scoring 114-114.

Roach triumphed 116–113. Roach would have been declared the new WBA champion if the knockdown had been appropriately acknowledged. He was left with an unsatisfactory impasse instead, one that seemed less like a just outcome and more like a lost chance.

Roach said. "It's like this. I've been cut like this ... I'm a little disappointed. I thought I pulled it out. I definitely thought I won. We can run it back."

Former WBA junior lightweight champion, Roach was well aware of what had transpired. He was left with nothing more than annoyance and a persistent feeling of unfairness after a single decision had deprived him of the opportunity to win a world title in a second weight class.

"To be honest, I really made it competitive," Davis said. "For sure, Lamont is a great fighter. He has the skills, to be sure. He has the punching power. Hopefully, we can run it back. Let's have a rematch in New York. ... Hopefully, we can get a rematch."
