On August 6, 2025, Hiroshima commemorated the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing with a poignant ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The event was attended by over 55,000 people, including representatives from a record 120 countries and regions, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel. A moment of silence was observed at 8:15 a.m., the exact time the bomb detonated in 1945. 

During the ceremony, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui delivered a powerful message, urging global leaders to heed the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He criticized the growing acceptance of nuclear weapons as deterrents, citing ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East as examples of lessons forgotten. Mayor Matsui emphasized the urgency for younger generations to reject nuclear deterrence, warning of its “utterly inhumane” consequences.   

The ceremony also honored the hibakusha, or atomic bomb survivors, many of whom are now over 86 years old. With fewer than 100,000 survivors remaining, their testimonies are increasingly vital in conveying the horrors of nuclear warfare. Last year, Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese grassroots organization of survivors, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts in promoting nuclear abolition. 

Despite Japan’s advocacy for nuclear disarmament, it has not signed the 2021 United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reiterated Japan’s reliance on the U.S. nuclear umbrella for protection, a stance that has drawn criticism from survivors and peace advocates.   

The United Nations Secretary-General also delivered a message, honoring the resilience of Hiroshima and its survivors, and reaffirming the commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons.
