During the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament held on Sunday, ozeki Hoshoryu surprised everyone by defeating the No. Ura as Maegashira 4 who showed tremendous power and skill. This was a very important round that occurred on day eight of the fifteen day tournament held at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan. At the start of the day the first position was shared by 5 impressive wrestlers with a record of 7-1. However, as the matches continued the positions shifted substantially, and eventually only two wrestlers remained at the top of the rankings.
Right after the beginning of the first bout, it became clear that Hoshoryu completely outplays Ura. Hoshoryu took command of the match right away when he attacked and did not let go. Hoshoryu has been fighting skillfully and tirelessly the whole match and does not look weak even during Ura’s attempt to come back. The win raised the profile of Hoshoryu as a powerful wrestler in the dohyo. He is the magnificent nephew of past yokozuna Asashoryu.
Another surprising result was that of the two youthful komusubi Onosato and the seasoned 37 year old No. 16 Takarafuji turned out to be the only winners in their popularity at the top of the ratings.
A win over No. 1 Maegashira Daieisho (6-2) who had shared lead the previous night Onosato showed his alertness and maneuverability on his feet.
The 23-year-old challenger aggressively attacked the first game of the tough battle with Onosato, who successfully defended himself against an opponent’s direct attack and waited for a counterattack from sekiwake veteran Daieisho, 30, who distinguished himself earlier. Onosato countered Daieisho’s moves in a manner that left Daieisho disoriented and leaning forward and therefore accumulated two points on Daieisho for the win.
Takarafuji’s fast and precise throw in the intense battle of the day accounts for No. 14 maegashira Ryuden and himself to tip over the bales of straw causing a brief uncertainty. Although it was Takarafuji who performed the technique first, he happened to fall first as well, and the judges had to scrutinize the move carefully. They raised the stakes of the match by carefully considering whether Ryuden’s foot had been above the ground before their block fall.
On the other hand the much awaited match between no. 10 Shonannoumi – 6-1 – heavy 6-1 and No. Mitakeumi was unpredictable in his moves as 7 maegashira. Shonannoumi is known for his skills in strategy – was expelled from the ring by Mitakeumi’s trick in a charge in the opening. Meanwhile, ozeki Kotozakura joined the fight and demonstrated his power by easily throwing out No. Oho and ensure his presence in the top eight with a 6-2 mark as a maegashira.
