Paris Paralympics End, Japan Wins 41 Medals Landing Rank 11 Overall

Paris Paralympics End, Japan Wins 41 Medals Landing Rank 11 Overall

The Paris Paralympics came to a close just like they started, in the rain, but marked with a festive atmosphere at the renowned Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France to commemorate the athletes' remarkable achievements and the spirit of overcoming challenges.

At the Paris Paralympics, a record of 175 Japanese athletes participated, winning a total of 41 medals: 14 gold, 10 silver, and 17 bronze. Japan ranked 10th in the number of gold medals, while landing in 11th overall. Although the total medal tally fell short of the record high of 52, set at the 2004 Athens Games, the number of gold medals surpassed the 13 won at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021.

This year’s Paralympics featured around 4,400 athletes competing in 549 medal events across 22 sports. Numerous records were set, with over 40 in para athletics and more than 30 in swimming.

China led the medal table with 94 gold medals out of a total of 220, way ahead of Great Britain with 49 golds, and the USA with 36 golds. This marks the sixth consecutive year that China has topped the medal table. In the Tokyo Paralympics, Britain and the US also finished in second and third place, respectively.

During the closing ceremony, the President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) reflected on the success of the Paris Games. He praised the event for its role in promoting inclusivity and for setting new standards for future Paralympics.

The Paralympic flag has been passed from Paris to Los Angeles, where the Games will return in 2028.
