The main event for UFC 300 was on the brink of a significant change. In the lead-up to the historic event on April 13, UFC officials were in a frenzy to secure the most significant bout to headline the card. According to Israel Adesanya, he received the call for a potential showdown against the current middleweight champion, Dricus du Plessis.
The much-discussed bout, which had been a subject of speculation for a while, was initially slated as the main event for UFC 300. However, Adesanya asserts that du Plessis and his team eventually turned down the opportunity.
“There’s some things that were meant to happen,” Adesanya said on Theo Von’s podcast. “They summoned me, I’m sure this is out there now … but they summoned me for [UFC] 300 and I was like ‘yep, let’s roll.’ But their side didn’t want it. They didn’t want it.
“They just fought [Sean] Strickland so maybe he had a little bit of niggly injuries and stuff but we’ve all got niggles and what not.”
The proposed UFC 300 main event featuring Israel Adesanya and Dricus du Plessis fell through, with Adesanya revealing that du Plessis and his team declined the bout. Adesanya suggested that the declined offer might be attributed to du Plessis' recent demanding fight in January, making a swift return challenging.
Dricus du Plessis faced a familiar setback that thwarted his chance at a title shot after defeating Robert Whittaker. A foot injury prevented him from confronting Israel Adesanya, resulting in Sean Strickland stepping in and achieving a surprising victory, ultimately earning the championship.
Adesanya highlighted that despite facing injuries in his career, he consistently showed up to compete.
“I’ve fought injured for the last how many fights, that’s why I took time off just to let my body heal,” Adesanya said. “It has healed and I’m sure there will be more injuries, it just happens through training. Like what we do for work, it’s constantly something.”
Regarding the next steps, Adesanya remains a prime candidate to challenge du Plessis for his first title defense, with both fighters expressing interest in a showdown in Africa. While the venue is yet to be confirmed, Adesanya and du Plessis are set for a future collision, diverging from a clash at UFC 300.
