Jannik Sinner Makes History at Shanghai Masters, Denying Novak Djokovic His 100th Title

In the history of the Shanghai Masters, Jannik Sinner became the youngest champion ever after he defeated Novak Djokovic to finish off an incredible year. Sinner controlled the tiebreak in a closely fought first set before outlasting Djokovic handily in the second. Interestingly, Sinner didn't give Djokovic a breakpoint chance for the second straight match. Sinner's triumph also ended Djokovic's perfect record in the Shanghai finals, making him the first man to defeat the Serbian three times in a succession since Rafael Nadal in 2013.

At the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday, Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic with a dominant display, earning his seventh victory of 2024 and leading the Tour.

The Italian played with impressive poise the entire way, winning 7-6(4), 6-3 to achieve a noteworthy triumph. Sinner's victory became him the first person to win more than six titles in a single year since Andy Murray did it in 2016. With the victory in the opening set, he improved his remarkable tiebreak record to 24-8 this year. After that, Sinner dominated the second set, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead and showcasing his supremacy on the court.

“It’s tough to tell you a secret about Djokovic because he doesn’t have any weaknesses. You have to try and use the small chances that he gives you, but there are not many during the match. He is a legend of our sport, he’s very tough to play against, so I am very happy.” said Sinner

“I’m very happy with how I handled the situation. He was serving great the first set, I couldn’t find a way to break him. I played a really good tie-break which gave me confidence to start off well in the second set.” Sinner added, “It was a very tough match, obviously, playing against Novak is one of the toughest challenges we have”

The powerful serving of Jannik Sinner prevented Novak Djokovic from becoming just the third player in history to win 100 tour-level titles, joining the ranks of legends Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer. In an exciting opening set, the 23-year-old displayed remarkable prowess, winning an amazing 81 percent (21 out of 26) of the points on his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

Sinner improved his record to 8-2 against Top-5 players on hard courts this season after defeating Tomas Machac in the semi-finals to secure the ATP Year-End No. 1 sponsored by PIF title just the day before. Notably, Carlos Alcaraz, his strong competitor, dealt him his only two losses in competitions held in Beijing and Indian Wells. Alcaraz and his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, watched Sunday's championship game from the stands as Sinner cemented his place as the best in the sport.

Djokovic had a stellar 4-0 record in the Shanghai finals prior to Sunday's encounter; his lone comeback triumph came against Andy Murray in 2012. But the 37-year-old was unable to manufacture a comeback against Sinner, who remained unwavering in the second set and refused to give up.

"I think I played some really good tennis, but congratulations to Jannik. He was just too good today. Too strong, too fast, well done. You're having an incredible year. You deserve this."  said Djokovic at the trophy ceremony, "I've had lots of success at Chinese tournaments in the past and hadn't played in China for five years, so I've missed it and I'm really glad that I came this year.”

Throughout the match, Sinner, who is currently the Shanghai tournament's youngest champion, exuded confidence with his serve. His supreme serving performance was evident, especially at a critical juncture in the tenth game when he was down 0/30. At that point, it seemed as though Djokovic was gaining momentum, but Sinner showed incredible fortitude by holding his serve and reversing the tide in his favor.

“I’m very happy with my performance throughout this whole tournament, it’s obviously a very special one," Sinner also made history by becoming the first player since Rafael Nadal in 2018 to capture three ATP Masters 1000 titles in a single season.
