Japan sustained their record run in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers Asian second round by thrashing Myanmar 5-0 on Thursday with Keito Nakamura and Koki Ogawa each getting two goals.

Nakamura and Ritsu Doan secured the goals in the first half for the Samurai Blue and thereby qualifying for the next round. At the last parts of their match against China at Group B in Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Nakamura started scoring his second goal that sealed the win. Further on in the second half Ogawa scored two more goals.

Japan, ranked 18, scored the opening goal against their ranked 163 hosts in the 17th minute of the game while Japan began the game in a three-man defensive line up. Seeing a lively Keito Nakamura set free by Daichi Kamada into vast areas on the left side. This was done by the winger of Reims who made a cut in the net with a low shot.

When Kamada returned to the starting line-up after being benched for the Asian Cup, he was felled, but he was back up again quickly enough. Ritsu Doan opened the scoring in the 34th minute after this low shot on the turn could have been even better as it hit the post first.

Brondby has an attacker, Yuito Suzuki, who debuts for Japan after the break but does not speak a word. Only Ogawa who had a poor first half of the match came back well. In the 75th minute he returned back in the field and scored Japan’s third goal from a header in a cross made by Yuki Soma who was a substitute.

Ogawa had not finished. His second goal was just on the 77th minute when Myanmar could not control a low cross from Soma. Nakamura scored his eighth goal in nine games for the national Team after Ogawa did a wonderful job of shielding his man and laying a delicious pass for a 20-meter curling shot.
