On October 1 (October 2nd Japan Time), MLB announced that Shohei Ohtani, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, was unanimously selected as the National League MVP for September, marking his fifth monthly award overall. This recognition follows his previous wins in June and July of 2021 and 2023 while with the Angels, making him the first Japanese player to earn this honor in both leagues.
Ohtani's outstanding September featured remarkable statistics, including a .393 batting average, 10 home runs, 32 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases over 26 games. His impressive on-base percentage of .458 and slugging percentage of .766 contributed to an OPS of 1.224, all leading the league. He was also named the weekly MVP for two consecutive weeks during the month.
The highlight of his month—and arguably one of the greatest days in baseball history—occurred on September 19, when he became the first player to achieve both 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season. In that game against the Marlins, Ohtani recorded six hits in six at-bats, including three home runs, 10 RBIs, and two stolen bases, showcasing his unique combination of power and speed.
Ohtani finished the season with 54 home runs and 130 RBIs, earning the double crown as he became only the fourth player in MLB history to win the home run title in both leagues and the first to do so in consecutive years. He raised his batting average from .287 to .310 over the final ten games, closing in on the batting title leader.
As the playoffs approach, this is Ohtani’s seventh year in the majors and his first postseason appearance. He will be competing in the division series at Dodger Stadium, facing the winner of the matchup between the Padres and the Braves. Fans are eagerly anticipating "SHO-TIME" this October as Ohtani continues to make history on the field.
