Japanese Stars Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani Lead Dodgers to Victory in 2025 Season Opener

Japanese Stars Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani Lead Dodgers to Victory in 2025 Season Opener

The Los Angeles Dodgers quickly demonstrated why they are designed to contend for consecutive World Series championships under the bright lights of the Tokyo Dome. They defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-1 on Tuesday in the eagerly awaited 2025 MLB season opener, displaying their depth and power.

In the second inning, the Cubs took the lead after striking first, but their momentum soon waned. The Dodgers' offense sprang to life by the sixth and never let up. Japan's own superstar, Shohei Ohtani, further cemented his place on baseball's grand stage with a strong effort, going 2-for-5 and crossing the plate twice.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched five innings for the Dodgers, striking out four and allowing one run as the beginning pitchers held their ground in well-known territory. Shota Imanaga of the Cubs struggled with control, walking four and striking out two despite keeping them hitless through four.

After the third inning, Chicago's bats stopped hitting, managing only three hits before the Dodgers relievers took over. Tanner Scott recorded his first save while wearing a Dodgers uniform, sealing the victory with a flawless ninth.

To increase the Dodgers' advantage, Shohei Ohtani doubled sharply to start the ninth inning, advanced to third on a grounder by Tommy Edman, and scored on an RBI single by Teoscar Hernández.

Los Angeles changed their lineup before the game because Mookie Betts was sick and Freddie Freeman was out with rib pain. Later, Freeman said that the pain started during hitting drills, but he gave himself a "75 percent chance" of getting back on Wednesday.

The 42,365 people in the Tokyo Dome demonstrated their loyalty. A uncommon and even unsettling scenario for any hitter to encounter was the silence that descended on the stadium each time Shohei Ohtani took the field. However, it was evidence of his enormous influence in Japan.

In his native nation, Ohtani's star power is unrivaled, garnering intense attention wherever he travels. Unfazed by the pressure of his MLB postseason debut, he was naturally apprehensive in this situation. It did not, however, frighten him. He contributed significantly to the Dodgers' triumph by hitting two batters and crossing the plate twice. When he hit a two-run homer during Saturday's exhibition game against the Yomiuri Giants, Tokyo fans had already seen his power.

“I was actually pretty nervous. It’s been a while since I was nervous, but today, I definitely felt it,” Ohtani said via his translator Will Ireton. “Just a very unique environment, a unique situation where I do feel that the fans are expecting me to get some hits, so that was a bit different.”
