Jon Jones Claims Superiority Over Francis Ngannou, Prefers No Conflict Without a Matchup

Jon Jones Claims Superiority Over Francis Ngannou, Prefers No Conflict Without a Matchup

Jon Jones Asserts Superiority Over Francis Ngannou, Rejects Animosity Outside the Cage

Amidst their presence at the 2023 PFL 5 event in Atlanta's Overtime Elite Arena, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou, both heavyweight MMA icons, shared the same space. While cornering his training partner Maurice Greene in the main event, Jones expressed his belief in being superior to Ngannou but emphasized his lack of interest in maintaining hostility. Despite their previous social media exchanges and interrupting each other's interviews to exchange jabs, Jones stated that he holds no ill will towards Ngannou.

“I’ve met Francis before, he’s a sweetheart of a guy,” Jones told ESPN. “Outside of the fight game, he’s a pretty respectful guy. I can be pretty respectful as well. I’m looking forward to seeing the brother and giving him some knuckles.

“… If we’re not fighting, there’s no reason to have a bunch of beef, especially when we see each other in person. It’s cool to talk trash and keep the fans excited and stuff like that, but if there’s no fight contract, we’re bros at the end of the day.”

Jones and Ngannou have engaged in numerous fiery exchanges ever since Jones joined the PFL. Ngannou recently voiced his remorse over not having the opportunity to face Jones during their time in the UFC but extended an invitation to both Jones and UFC president Dana White for a potential cross-promotional fight in the PFL.

“I know that I’m badder than him,” Jones said. “So, I don’t have to give him any weird looks or whatever. He’s big muscles, he’s a very impressive-looking figure, but when it comes to this fight game, it’s my whole world and I know who I am.”

Following the conclusion of the event, Jones and Ngannou coincidentally encountered each other near the cage. The two heavyweights exchanged handshakes and engaged in a brief conversation characterized by a competitive yet respectful tone.  “You don’t want no smoke,” Jones told Ngannou. “No, you sat back for three years,” Ngannou responded.

Although the interaction involved some competitive words, it was also marked by smiles and handshakes, creating a sense of respect between the two competitors. This moment showcased their mutual understanding that they missed the opportunity to fight each other due to their current affiliations with separate promotions.
