Judge and Ohtani Exchange First-Inning Homers in Yankees-Dodgers World Series Rematch

Judge and Ohtani Exchange First-Inning Homers in Yankees-Dodgers World Series Rematch

You can all relax if you were afraid the New York Yankees will lose a significant lead against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series. They waited till the sixth instead of collapsing in the fifth this time.

The story hardly changed in their first meeting since that pivotal October finale, in which the Dodgers lifted the championship and the Yankees suffered a heartbreaking collapse from grace. The Yankees scored runs quickly and deliberately. But then things started to go apart. Costly mistakes, lost opportunities, and a dominant Dodgers lineup turned the tide once more, as Los Angeles rallied for an 8-5 triumph.

The first shot was fired by Aaron Judge. Austin Wells did the same. Paul Goldschmidt and Trent Grisham followed, each providing an exclamation point of his own.

Four Yankees had gone deep against Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin by the conclusion of the third inning, creating what appeared to be a decisive 5-2 lead. Shohei Ohtani's first-inning homer, which served as a brief reminder of the Dodgers' firepower, but insufficient to stop the Bronx assault.

The déjà vu was evident, even though it wasn't a 5-0 lead like the one they blew in Game 5 of the 2024 Fall Classic. The Dodgers struck with chilling precision in the sixth as the tension resumed.

Shohei Ohtani tied a franchise record and sent the fans into a frenzy with his second home run of the evening, which was his 15th in May and his 22nd of the year.

The Yankees had a series of pandemonium as a result. The game was tied after four straight Dodgers reached safely, leaving runners at the bases and no one out. Michael Conforto played the part of heartbreaker after Tommy Edman's fielder's choice off the bat and Max Muncy's calculated walk loaded the bases with one out.

Conforto gave the Dodgers a 6-5 lead by drawing a bases-loaded walk, giving the Yankees still another mistake to think about.

And the harm didn't end there. Los Angeles added two more runs in the seventh, extending the lead when Freddie Freeman managed to slip under a throw to the plate that came far ahead of him. For whatever reason, the call stood. What the unaided eye questioned was verified by replay: safe.

The three-game series between two of baseball's most recognizable teams, whose rivalry goes back beyond recent heartbreaks in October, began on Friday. The Dodgers did really win. However, they also used the occasion to stir things up, with their supporters loudly reminding the Yankees and everyone else of how badly they lost Game 5.

The Yankees obviously objected to the chitchat and had every chance to respond in the most important place: on the field. They gave the trash-talkers new ammunition instead of putting an end to the commotion.

The Dodgers strengthened their hold on the top spot in the NL West with the win, improving to an NL West-leading 35-22. Even if Friday's loss seemed like a slip-up in a big game, the Yankees, now 35-21, are still leading the AL East.
