This summer Olympics has witnessed many surprising sensations and one of the most popular of them is a 51 years old athlete from Mersin, Turkey. A role model to most, Yusuf Dikeç joined the Gendarmerie General Command at a corporal rank but did not know that he had a flare for shooting. He is a single father of a daughter, and he also mentions that he likes “dancing”.

With his teammate Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, Dikeç competed in the Olympics for the fifth time and earned the first Olympic medal for Turkey in the shooting discipline. They also secured the silver medal during their Tuesday performance in the mixed team 10m air pistol event.

However, it was a picture of Dikeç taken from the competition with his weapon in hand and looking determined, and peaceful look in his face became his portrait to international fame. He seemed to be amongst the people in the crowd, the left hand was in the pocket of his trousers.

However, this was not exactly the case with reality by any stretch of the imagination. Dikeç never seemed to be peaceful or calm as he seemed to be, even though he tried to portray that. That pressure was particularly substantial for an experienced competitor like him and the Olympics were no ordinary competition.

“He had so much anxiety, so much pressure on his heart,” Tarhan said after the competition of her partner, with Dikeç next to her, agreeing. “Our heartbeat is really beating. Is really so much beating. It is really hard to shoot in the final of the Olympic games.”

Dikec declared that the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles will be his next goal. "We will get the gold medal in 2028 and then, God willing, I think it is time to let it go."

In the 10 meters air pistol mixed team competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, after narrowly losing with a score of 16-14 to Serbia in the final, Dikec won the silver. As a result, Turkey made history by securing its first shooting medal of any colour at the Olympics.

In his illustrious career, Dikec has also been crowned five time European Shooting Championship, two times World Shooting Championship holder and one time Shooting World Cup holder.
