At UFC 306, The Sphere in Las Vegas was brought to the limelight and became a record-breaking evening for the UFC promotion. However, it was not only the location that made an impression—Merab Dvalishvili reinforced his status as a champion by beating at Sean O’Malley and becoming the bantamweight champion with a strong but unremarkable performance.
As for the majority of the bout, a man with the Georgian name, 33-year-old Dvalishvili, prevailed on the ground and wrestling. This was after he was awarded the judges points of 49-46, 48- 47, and 48-47 in his favor. Even O’Molley tried but he could not follow it due to a plan proposed by Dvalishvili which focused on the restrain and takedown of the opponent.
What made UFC 306 memorable is that fighters displayed extraordinary determination and The Sphere’s advanced technology that set right tone for the night.
“Now look at me,” Dvalishvili said. “I’m a UFC champion and I’m living my dream. I inspire so many people in my country and around the world.”
Merab Dvalishvili defeated Sean O’Malley for twenty-five consecutive minutes of bantamweight UFC performance. He successfully defended the title via a unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 48-47), thus keeping his record intact of the 11 consecutive wins. When the bout progressed, Dvalishvili’s competitor was out of breath and had no chance against such relentless speed and terrifying striking against O’Malley.
"The Machine" continued to advance unrelentingly even after taking multiple punches that caused gashes on his face. O'Malley was unable to counter Dvalishvili's unrelenting ground dominance, as he was frequently pulled down and forcefully pounded onto the canvas. O'Malley's accurate striking ultimately proved ineffective against the Georgian's stifling domination on the mat.
Of course, there were some uncanny times during the battle. There was a brief interruption early in the first round when Dvalishvili seemed to address Tim Welch, O’Malley’s trainer. With four seconds remaining in the second round, Dvalishvili, who was pressed against the cage, kissed O’Malley; however, he quickly got up and left. The sight that met him was even more eerie. He was able to bounce back faster and land another hit before the bell could go off because of this strange distance.
O’Malley was able to do enough in the third and fifth rounds specifically to prevent matters from getting too flipped for the upset. Still, Dvalishvili had gained a commanding lead at this point, leaving it obvious who was the boss. Even the heated interaction within the Sphere should have signaled to O’Malley that only a K.O will clinch him the victory. However, the knockout punch never came today.
The 29-year-old from Phoenix, began the fight as the marginal favorite at BetMGM Sportsbook with -125. But then the unusual occurred in the presence and imagination of sixteen thousand twenty-four reveling spectators at the Sphere. After the event, UFC President Dana White boasted that the event set records, and that the gate earnings of $22 million were the highest ever for the UFC and the young facility. White then pointed out that it was a historic evening for the sport and that the event was a record breaking in terms of the goods sold.
“Literally, the whole thing seamless,” White said. “It was perfect. We didn’t have a lot of time to rehearse, but the team absolutely nailed it.”
