Meta, formerly Facebook, and luxury eyewear brand Ray-Ban have revealed the next generation of their smart glasses technology. Powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform, the new glasses add live streaming capabilities and Meta's AI voice assistant.
Unveiled at Meta's headquarters, the glasses represent the first eyewear enabling hands-free livestreaming to social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Users can broadcast their experiences for up to 30 minutes by toggling between the glasses and phone cameras.
The glasses also introduce Meta AI, the company's conversational assistant, currently exclusive to the US market. By saying "Hey Meta," wearers can get information and control features via voice commands.
With a redesigned charging case and enhanced 12MP ultrawide camera, microphone, and audio systems, the glasses aim to improve photo, video, and calling functions. The companion Meta View app offers expanded cross-platform integration.
The new collection will be available on October 17 in 21 styles with prescription, sun, and polarized lens options. A "remix" feature also lets users customize frame, lens and finish.
This second-generation model shows Meta's continued investment in smart glasses and wearable augmented reality. By packing more utility into a sleek, familiar form, Meta and Ray-Ban seek to push smart glasses into the mainstream.
The added live streaming and AI voice control provide creators and everyday users with new hands-free ways to share experiences. As Meta works to build its metaverse future, these new glasses provide a glimpse into how seamless human-technology interactions could unlock creative possibilities.
