Elon Musk confirms he is changing Twitter's iconic bird logo to an "X" symbol to rebrand the platform under his new leadership.
Elon Musk has announced his intention to change Twitter's iconic logo from a blue bird to an "X" symbol. This represents the latest major shift since Musk acquired the social media platform for $44 billion last year.
In a series of tweets on Sunday, the billionaire owner stated he is aiming to roll out the new "X" logo globally as early as Monday.
Musk tweeted that Twitter will soon say goodbye to its current brand and bird logo. The "X" logo change signifies Musk's desire to put his mark on Twitter after officially taking over the company. This rebranding does away with one of Twitter's most recognizable features in favor of simplicity and starting fresh under new leadership. The move has generated both excitement and skepticism from users as Musk rapidly transforms the platform.
Musk tweeted an image previewing a flickering "X" logo and later confirmed during a Twitter Spaces audio chat that the logo change is happening. When asked if Twitter's logo will be altered, he replied "Yes" and added that the rebranding is long overdue.
Musk's posts make it definitive that Twitter's famous bird logo will be replaced by a simple "X" symbol under his leadership. He implied the "X" reflects the company's name Twitter and its web domain, and should have replaced the bird logo much sooner. Musk's confirmation that he is following through with changing the logo to "X" underscores his desire to overhaul the company's image since acquiring it.
Musk acquires Twitter in October 2022 and has rebranded the company as X Corp, aiming to transform it into a "super app" like China's WeChat. When buying Twitter, he stated that it would accelerate building X, his envisioned Everything app.
Musk's other ventures like SpaceX and his 1990s startup X.com, now PayPal, also incorporated X in their names.
Twitter currently has around 200 million daily 1 users but has faced repeated technical issues under Musk's leadership after he fired much of the staff for $44 billion last year.
Many users and advertisers have soured on Twitter amid introduced fees, content moderation changes, and unbanned right-wing accounts. Musk said ad revenue has dropped by half since he took over.
