Florida Panthers Claim First Stanley Cup Title in Franchise History with Game 7 Victory Over Edmonton Oilers

Florida Panthers Claim First Stanley Cup Title in Franchise History with Game 7 Victory Over Edmonton Oilers

In the decisive seventh game of the Stanley Cup Final, the Florida Panthers triumphed over the Edmonton Oilers, winning 2-1 to secure their first NHL trophy ever and avoid the worst possible and becoming the first team with the Presidents’ Trophy in franchise history to lose a series in seven games. It was a nice end to it, very explosive.

Following a thoroughly commanding game three win to establish a 3–0 stranglehold on the series the Panthers seemed all set to enjoy a comprehensive victory. But they were wiped out by the cycle of offences and defence mistakes and thus in the next three games, Edmonton was able to score as many as 18 goals against them and consequently take only one goal, setting up the final, deciding seventh game.

The match of the week was on Monday night beginning with the Panthers attracting an energetic audience packed in Amerant Bank Arena. They failed to unlock the opposition’s defenses and open the scoring in the match since Game 3. Once Steinbergs power play was up Victor Hedman tried to pass the puck to Carter Verhaeghe who capitalized on a turnover by Evan Rodrigues to score for his team and make it 1-0 with less than four and a half minutes to the first period.

Scoring the goal, Verhaeghe equalized the Panthers franchise record for the maximum number of goals scored in on playoffs run. Including playoffs, it was his eleventh goal and this was the Stanley Cup that was at the stake. Sticking their fingers together across the audience, one could hear the sound of the ovation, feeling as if the events that are occurring are historic.

However, the benefit assured to Florida was only temporary. But it was not long ago to wait, as Mattias Janmark scored to make the score 1-1 on a breakaway goal in the two-minutes mark. After that, or rather, as far as in the middle of the game, the intensity rose up much higher, with both the sides fighting on the ice actively.

The Oilers’ opportunity of equalizing came closely in the second half through a shot by Warren Foegele that hit the back of the net but was ruled out for a goalie interference through a video review by Sergei Bobrovsky of the Panthers. But then there was this moment when a players’ name trait was used – Dmitry Kulikov, a defenseman, was able to make a blind stop to get the puck a couple millimeters away from the goal line.

Sam Reinhar done tremendous stick work that was followed by a fantastic save that pulled him out of the goal to chase the puck at the other end and shoot a wrister from the right circle. At the 15:Skinner was unable to cover up the puck, and the shot went in, making the score 2-1 for the Panthers and entertaining the spectators.

As far as Reinhart is concerned, although he scored 57 goals in the regular round and brought the team to victory in this game with a goal, he has been out of scoring point for three consecutive games, but he received the forgiveness. He struggled, of course, at many points in the film but he came through when it most counted.

Meanwhile, Edmonton continued to search for a goal that could get them the equalizer as the clock ticked down in the third period. Thus, they lost opportunities to capitalize on several opportunities that they had narrowed down to. Bobrovsky remained firm and ensured 23 saves that were critical to ensure the victory was won.

The Panthers are winning their very first Stanley Cup series since their founding and their playoff run to the championship game has only been thwarted in the previous year and two years prior. As already stated, therefore, winning the cup one year after participating in the championship game it has earned a place among only three clubs in the previous forty years to accomplish it.

“It’s not a dream anymore. It’s not a dream, it’s reality. I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it,” Panthers’ star Matthew Tkachuk said after the game. “I can believe how good these two years have been. I’m so thankful for this group of guys…something really special here with what we have.”

Leading the Oilers to the glory, the forward Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy collecting 8 goals and thirty-four assists in 25 playoffs games, 42 in total. He appeared to be the third player in the National Hockey League register to reach the 40 plus point mark more so in a postseason, breaking the record most assists in a playoff year set by Wayne Gretzky.

They sought to be on the other side of history by being the second team in the NHL history to if a 0–3 series in the Stanley Cup Final. Historically, 4 teams are on record to have made it through the NHL postseason with a 0–3 set back and swung right back to win. However, no team has ever come this close in the Stanley Cup final, and the last time the Maple Leafs won it was in 1942 when they beat the Red Wings.

Following this loss, Canadian clubs do not win the Stanley Cup up to this year third decade. There has not been any Canadian team that has won the Stanley cup after 1993 Montreal Canadiens.
