NBA Finals: Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis Return Lead Boston to Victory in Game 1 Showdown

NBA Finals: Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis Return Lead Boston to Victory in Game 1 Showdown

Returning to the court after a calf injury that kept him sidelined since late April, the Boston Celtics’ centre, Kristaps Porzingis, came back in the game. In the last game, he contributed immensely for the Boston Celtics as the team triumphed the Dallas Mavericks 108-79 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The performance he put up can only be described as excellent.

Porzingis scored 20 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and made 3 blocks; his playmaking showed that he affected Boston’s play type. Following the first quarter, the Celtics were leading by 17 points and extended that to 21 points by the half time. Doncic gave his best try but with Brown’s defense holding the ship, Boston went into the third break with a 20-point lead to confirm their dominance.

Porzingis outshined everyone single-handedly and outscored the entire Dallas Mavericks’ bench players combined. On the other hand, Jaylen Brown led the Celtics in scoring with 22 points and was supported by 16 points from Jayson Tatum. On the other side, Luka Doncic scored 30 points for the Mavericks while Dorian Finney-Smith made 14 points.

Luka Dončić and the Mavericks are on the downside in their inaugural NBA Finals after capturing the championship with Dirk Nowitzki in 2011. To make things even worse, they had previously emerged victorious in a total of five consecutive away fixtures in the Thursday night game.

Dallas began this game down by a significant margin, however during the third quarter Dallas began cutting away at the lead of Boston. Irving came up with some clutch baskets and Dončić’s three-pointer out of the timeout reduced it to an eight-point game and initiated the 20-6 burst.

After the timeout, Boston replies with a run of 14-2; however, Dallas failed to capitalize on this opportunity. In this come back they were able to cut the lead to the dismay of the cavaliers to a 20 point lead and defeat them by 18 points.

Jaylen Brown had 22 points, shooting 7 of 12 from the field, while Jayson Tatum contributed 16 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assist demonstrating his versatility. Most importantly, seven different Celtics players hit the net from long range at least twice, thus writing their names in the annals of the NBA Finals.

Dončić also reaffirmed his prowess as a scorer as he topped the Mavericks with 30 points and also achieved 10 rebounds to complete an effective double-double. Despite these great settings, he only score 4 out of 12 three-point attempts, showing that his shooting is less efficient. Notably, Dončić contributed to a majority of the team’s successful 3-point attempts, which confirmed his impact on the Dallas’ scoring prowess. Irving contributed 12 points in adding to the score, while P.J.Washington and Dončić both contributed 14 points with eight rebounds on the side of Dallas Mavericks. Even for the Mavericks, their highest postseason-scoring team, they were only able to put down 89 points, which further illustrates their woes against the Celtics’ defense.

Dallas also struggled in generating scoring chances collectively, which was evident by the combined total of only nine assists in the entire game. In fact, the Celtics were quite unified; they recorded twenty-three assists in the game, proving that they well know how to pass and find each other open to make shots. To also corroborate their control on both the offense and defense, the Boston Celtics’ defense was also impressive as they earned nine blocks in the game.

The performance of Dončić and Irving proves that even if it is still at the beginning of the season, the Mavericks might be able to offer tough competition. However, it seems as though the Celtics are willing to make a leap into capturing their 18th franchise title. Dallas can clinch the series victory without triumph in Sunday’s game but they must keep a narrow lead until the series shift to Texas. As for their promises, the possibilities may be easily turned into a failure if they do not act.
