On Monday, the NBA released news that Dikembe Mutombo, who became famed for the finger wave salute he made after every block and who was a blocking machine, has died of brain cancer at the age of 58 years.
Naismith basketball hall fame was awarded to Mutombo in 2015. In his distinguished career he became a four times’ defending champion, a four times’ NBA Defensive Player of the Year and an eight times NBA All-Star. In his course of his professional career of eighteen years, he mainly played defense and led in block in NBA five consecutive times. He ended up as the second-highest blocking shots player in the NBA history among all players. His joyous smile that also showed a personality transcendent of basketball, contradicted his rather looming physique on the basketball court.
The first college admission experience of the 7-foot-2-inch tall Dikembe Mutombo began at Georgetown University in Washington; he was on scholarship after being born in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). However, he started playing basketball only in the his second year and quickly earned recognition as a talented player and a great defender.
Denver Nuggets picked Mutombo fourth overall in 1991 NBA draft realising his brains and catapulting into fabulous one.
In a statement, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said, “I had the privilege of traveling the world with Dikembe and seeing first-hand how his generosity and compassion uplifted people. He was always accessible at NBA events over the years – with his infectious smile, deep booming voice and signature finger wag that endeared him to basketball fans of every generation.
“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.
“There was nobody more qualified than Dikembe to serve as the NBA’s first Global Ambassador. He was a humanitarian at his core. He loved what the game of basketball could do to make a positive impact on communities, especially in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo and across the continent of Africa.
“Dikembe’s indomitable spirit continues on in those who he helped and inspired throughout his extraordinary life. I am one of the many people whose lives were touched by Dikembe’s big heart and I will miss him dearly.
