When Shohei Ohtani joined the Los Angeles Dodgers this spring, there was uncertainty about what his performance would look like with a focus solely on hitting after undergoing elbow surgery. Ohtani’s previous success came from balancing both pitching and hitting, but now, with his pitching sidelined, it was uncertain how this would affect his performance at the plate.

Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, acknowledged that focusing exclusively on hitting could benefit Ohtani offensively, and indeed, this has proven correct as Ohtani is having what might be the best offensive season of his career. 

On Wednesday, he hit his career-best 47th home run, a powerful 405-foot blast into deep right-center at Dodger Stadium. The home run was recorded at 118.1 miles per hour, making it one of his hardest-hit balls this year. He also recorded his 48th stolen base of the season in the second inning, after drawing a walk against Wicks.

The two-time MVP is on track to surpass his previous career high of 46 home runs set in 2021. Last year, an oblique strain cut short his final season with the Los Angeles Angels, but this year, Ohtani has continued to make history. Having signed a record-setting 10-year, $700 million deal, he is on pace to set a major-league record for hitting 40 home runs and stealing 40 bases in the fewest games ever—126 so far this season. There’s even a chance he could become the first player to achieve a 50-50 season.

If he reaches 50 home runs, Ohtani would also challenge Dodgers' history. The current franchise record for home runs in a single season is 49, set by Shawn Green in 2001.
