Naomi Osaka, who boasts four Grand Slam titles, and Barbora Krejcikova have chosen not to compete in the Dubai Tennis Championships. Additionally, Krejcikova has decided to forego the current tournament due to a back injury.
“We regret to inform you that Barbora Krejcikova and Naomi Osaka have pulled out of this year’s tournament. We wish both players the best of luck for the rest of the 2024 season and look forward to seeing both players return to Dubai in the near future,” In a statement posted on the tournament's website, Osaka expressed her return to the event after an absence of five years.
Krejcikova, who secured her first Dubai title last year by defeating world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in straight sets in the final, has opted not to participate in this year's WTA 1000 event due to a persistent back issue.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce my withdrawal from the Dubai tournament,” the world No. 12 said. “This decision wasn’t easy, especially given my fond memories and anticipation to compete again. However, my back injury requires further healing time. But I am committed to returning stronger next year.”
Osaka commented on her non-participation in this year's competition: “I’m really sorry that I have to withdraw from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships this season. I have loved playing in Dubai in previous years, and I want to wish the tournament organizers a successful event in 2024.”
The Czech player, aged 28, made this statement, "This decision wasn't easy, especially given my fond memories and anticipation to compete again. However, my back injury requires further healing time. But I am committed to returning stronger next year”
In a noteworthy development, the young talent Celine Simunyu is set to make history at the championships on Friday as she becomes the first Irish female player to receive a wildcard for the qualifying rounds of the WTA event.
At 19 years old, Celine Simunyu holds the position of the top-ranked Irish women's tennis player. She has been a part of the Billie Jean Cup representing her country since 2021. Presently positioned at 633 in the WTA rankings, Simunyu is scheduled to compete against Cristina Bucsa, ranked No. 61, on Court 7 this afternoon in the initial qualifying round of the Dubai tournament.
Simunyu recently achieved success alongside her Swiss doubles partner, Sebastiana Scilipoti, at the ITF/Tennis Europe W15 event in Turkiye. On the other hand, her opponent, Bucsa, advanced to the quarterfinals in women's singles at both the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open and the Qatar Open doubles tournament.
