Oscar Piastri Wins Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen Penalized After Late-Race Drama With Russell

Oscar Piastri Wins Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen Penalized After Late-Race Drama With Russell

Oscar Piastri maintained his lead at the top of the drivers' world championship by leading the Spanish Grand Prix from beginning to end on Sunday.

Max Verstappen and George Russell fought with one lap remaining in the race after Verstappen was told to move aside but held his position as his Mercedes opponent tried to pass him on a curve, while Piastri easily won.

After the two cars collided, Verstappen was given a 10-second penalty by the stewards, which caused him to finish in 10th place. Russell pulled off and was later allowed to continue.

Charles Leclerc finished third for Ferrari, securing the last position on the podium, while Lando Norris achieved a solid second-place result for McLaren.

The action was really quiet for the most of the race—until everything changed in a few short seconds. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a rising star for Mercedes, lost power unexpectedly, causing his vehicle to drift helplessly into the gravel. In order to neutralize the field and compress the pack for a stressful restart, the incident triggered a safety car.

Chaos quickly followed when the racing resumed. As Verstappen turned a corner, he seemed to lose control for a second, allowing Leclerc to take advantage of a slight slip. The two vehicles briefly touched as the Ferrari sped by on the straight, a wheel-to-wheel contact that only made the moment more intense. George Russell then charged in from behind. In a bold move that forced Verstappen off the track completely, he dove around the outside, adding spice to a race that had been quiet—until it wasn't.

“Ultimately we came home in P4 and he came home in P10. I don’t really know what was going through his mind,” George Russell told broadcaster. “It felt deliberate in the moment.”

“Max is such an amazing driver and so many people look up to him. It’s just a shame something like that continues to keep happening. It seems totally unnecessary and never seems to benefit himself.”

Moments before the two cars collided in a flashpoint that heightened tension, the four-time world champion was furious after the collision, his annoyance leaking over the team radio as he vehemently disputed orders to give up fourth position to Russell.
