Pride Of Jenni, the victor of the All-Star Mile, demonstrated exceptional prowess, resilience, and speed, surpassing all expectations.
Mr. Brightside, who was widely favored by the audience as the reigning runner-up of the prestigious All-Star Mile, encountered a significant setback as he fell behind to a considerable distance, making it challenging for him to regain lost ground and contend for the victory.
Starting from barrier 11, began the race by dropping back and settling into the third-last position. As the race progressed, he gradually fell further behind, ultimately finding himself trailing the leader, Pride Of Jenni, by a significant margin of approximately 15 lengths at one point during the race.
While not entirely insurmountable, the challenge was undoubtedly formidable. With a mighty surge within the final 300 meters, the six-time Group 1-winner exerted a significant effort. However, despite the valiant attempt, Pride Of Jenni surged to victory under the guidance of trainer Ciaron Maher and jockey Declan Bates, leaving the former champion to chase in vain.
As predicted by both punters (betters) and pundits (experts), the unfolding of the race followed the expected script. The leading contenders, who were highly favored by those placing bets and by knowledgeable observers, engaged in a competitive struggle to determine the victor as they approached the finish line.
All that remained was to determine the final standings and the significant $1.4 million prize gap between them. Under Bates's adept guidance, Pride Of Jenni secured the coveted $2 million first prize, leaving Mr. Brightside to settle for second place and a $600,000 reward for its connections.
Could Mr. Brightside have positioned himself more advantageously during the race? Should he have pressed forward from barrier 11 to maintain proximity to Pride Of Jenni, ensuring a better chance to challenge for the lead?
"I didn't look either way (on straightening), I just kept her aimed at the line," Bates said.
"I'm used to Mr Brightside flashing down my outside, so I was half expecting it, but I was pretty glad to see inside that last 100 metres he wasn't in my vision anywhere. She's special."
Demonstrated exceptional skill in managing Pride Of Jenni during the crucial first 400 meters of the race. By executing a precise approach, he enabled the mare to gradually progress and assume the lead without excessive exertion. This strategic maneuver allowed Pride Of Jenni to maintain momentum and control of the race, setting a favorable pace for the ensuing competition.
"I got there doing it in a nice manner and once she turned down the side, she wants to go and at that point you're almost a passenger and pointing her in the right direction," Bates said.
"I put her there and she did the rest."
Buffalo River demonstrated impressive determination as he maintained proximity to the race leader until they approached the home turn. Despite his brave effort, he couldn't hold off the late charges from Mr. Brightside and Cascadian, who surged past him in the final moments of the race.
Mr. Brightside and Cascadian, who had secured the top two positions in the All-Star Mile the previous year, replicated their performance by finishing second and third respectively in this year's event. This consistent display of success over two consecutive years highlights their enduring competitiveness at this elite level of racing.
Champion jockey Craig Williams acknowledged the "dominant” of the victor while commending Mr. Brightside's impressive performance, describing it as “Huge”.
"We didn't have the best barrier draw and under those circumstances … you see how far he stood them up and for him to only be beaten the margin he was beaten in the end, he went super," Williams said.
"If the plan is to go to the Australian Cup I'm looking forward to him at 10 furlongs, that's for sure."
Tony Ottobre, the proud owner of Pride Of Jenni, celebrated her remarkable accomplishments as a dual Group 1 winner and victor of the All-Star Mile.
During the preceding spring season, Pride Of Jenni achieved historical feats by triumphing in two prestigious Group 1 races at the renowned Melbourne Cup Carnival. She displayed her exceptional talent with commanding front-running performances in both the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) and the Champions Mile (1600m), showcasing her versatility and ability to excel at the highest level of competition.
In contrast, Mr. Brightside's journey culminated with a commendable second-place finish in the Champions Mile, signifying the conclusion of an arduous and extensive preparation.
"Brightside is fantastic, a great horse, but when he gets to the mile, he's got big trouble."
