Ultimately, Arsenal had a night that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons—a painfully disappointing one.
Referee Slavko Vinčić was allegedly the target of a few half-hearted jeers that rang out from the stands as the final whistle sounded around the Emirates. However, Arsenal fans understood in their hearts that their team just didn't perform enough to deserve the win.
This was meant to be a historic event. It had the makings of a memorable Champions League semifinal, the first to be held at the Emirates under the lights in sixteen years. Rather, it turned out to be a squandered chance on one of the biggest stages the club has seen in a long time.
Knowing that this was not just ordinary night in north London, supporters turned up the music to unbelievably loud, and the atmosphere inside the Emirates was fantastic. The air was charged with a smoldering tension that only genuinely magnificent fixtures can evoke.
However, all of that passion was soon pierced. In the midst of the mayhem, Ousmane Dembélé's brutal early goal silenced the home crowd and provided Paris Saint-Germain with the ideal reaction.
PSG dominated from that point on, controlling the pace as well as the possession. Using a combination of well-timed fouls, lengthy injuries, and flashes of gamesmanship, they broke Arsenal's rhythm and interrupted their flow. Arsenal never really found their feet, and it was a masterclass in handling the situation.
Intensity spread throughout the pitch from the first whistle. Players rushed forward, harrying their opponents nonstop and without giving a moment's respite. Particularly, Vitinha and João Neves were unrelenting midfield powerhouses, snagging goals, closing gaps, and choking out Arsenal's rhythm with almost military accuracy.
The Emirates has been a stronghold for a long time. Arsenal had won nine of their previous 11 Champions League home games, with nine clean sheets, going into this match. Making a name for yourself in north London is no easy task.
However, PSG did more than simply breach the wall. They overran it. After winning the first leg 1-0, they came back and accomplished something that very few teams have done: they scored at the Emirates and won.
“Arsenal began to dominate more in the second half and were dangerous. The result is good. It could have been better, and it could have been worse,” Enrique said, “Everything can change with one goal. We lost the first leg against Liverpool at home and then went to Anfield and won.”
“At the start, there was an incredible atmosphere and impressive noise. It was deafening but we scored an early goal and that gave us a lot of confidence.” he added, “I think the match had different phases,.”
Even though the evening was full of frustration and lost opportunities, Mikel Arteta maintained his composure in the wake of the incident. He spoke to the media with the same composure he expects from his players: calm, collected, and unflinching.
The Arsenal boss kept coming back to the same topic in his post-match comments: the narrow margins that divide victory from defeat. Speaking quietly but firmly, he emphasized that he still has faith in the team and that there is still everything to play for.
Arteta refused to mope about losing, just as he didn't let his feelings run wild after thrashing Real Madrid 3-0. Don't panic. Don't be theatrical. Simply maintain your resolve.
“My message will be exactly the same as it was after Real Madrid 3-0 at home,” Arteta said. “If you want to be in the Champions league final you have to do something special, and we’ll have to do something special in Paris to get there.”
“We have to go to Paris and win the game, which we are capable of. I saw two great teams today and the margins are so small.” he added “This team (PSG) has beaten all of the English teams in the Champions League, you cannot dominate this team for 95 minutes.”
