The Summer Grand Sumo Tournament championship was determined on Sunday when 23 year old komusubi Onosato faced sekiwake Abi and rose to victory by displaying such impressive skill and stamina. These are some of the reasons why this three round victory earned in only the seventh professional match makes McCracken the least experienced champ in the history of the sport. Blessed with innate talent and excellent decision making skills, Onosato has climbed the ladder amazingly well.
Onosato was dominating his opponent as the eightheen day of the fifteen day meet at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan neared to an end. His four other wrestlers were Abi, who was at 10-4 along with the rest of the team with a 12-3 record. It was palpable tension because for Abi to extend his chances, he had to plow through the inexorable Komusubi for a championship playoff.
The young man managed to beat his opponent who must have been a professional from the pit by performing a great move within a few seconds. Getting a definitive win, he bent Abi to one side before muscling him out of the ring.
"I came close but couldn't win in January and March, and managing to take my chance like this makes me happy," Onosato said. "I am really happy that I could deliver a championship for the people of Ishikawa to see."
"When I made my debut last May, I couldn't imagine winning the makuuchi division in a year's time. Since January, winning the Emperor's Cup became a target and not just a dream, and I'm happy to have achieved that goal."
With pride, the new champion took his first technique prize as well as his first Outstanding Performance prize. He demonstrated his exceptional skills and proved himself to be the first wrestler to get one of the three prestigious ‘sansho’ awards for the first three ‘makuuchi’ tournaments since 1999. It shows how he rose quickly through the ranks and attained consistent victories in the world of sumo.
Takerufuji who triumph out of his tenth professional bash, established the prior record for the least experienced grand tournament winner in March. This wonderful performance indicated his rapid advancement in the sumo world and was regarded as an important transitional period, which showed his potential and perseverance. Onosato, who has recently set this record and won the championship title in his very first professional bout, altered the definitions of success and became a pioneer of a new age in sumo wrestling.
Kotozakura claimed the victory in the championship match for the seventh straight time by defeating Hoshoryu, ozeki (10-5). Still, No. 1 maegashira Daieisho won the bout against No. 8 Kotoshoho (8-7), but he was only one win from clinching the championship. This provided a taste of what was to come for this intense climax of the tournament that left the fans chomping on the bit waiting for the next fight.
Oshoma that is ranked in the maegashira class in the 14th position displayed great skill to clinch the Fighting Spirit Prize coupled with excellent performance of 10-5. What makes it even more impressive is the fact that it was his first basho in the top makuuchi division. During the competition, Oshoma showed that he is agile, determined and deserves credit for his battling spirit.
