The Vuelta a Andalucía Ruta del Sol is rescheduled to commence on Friday and conclude on Sunday, as ongoing farmer protests led to the cancellation of Thursday's second stage.
Initially planned with five stages, the Vuelta a Andalucía Ruta del Sol faced disruptions when Wednesday's opening stage had to be canceled due to protests diverting police attention. Subsequently, organizers announced on Wednesday evening that Thursday's second stage was also canceled. To salvage the race, two of the remaining three stages have been modified as organizers navigate the challenges posed by the ongoing protests in the region.
The race is rescheduled to kick off on Friday, replacing the initially planned 161km route with a 5km time trial. Following this adjustment, Saturday's stage will feature a shorter 100km route that culminates in a summit finish.
As of now, the final day's stage covering a distance of 168km from Benahavís to La Línea de la Concepción remains unchanged. However, it's important to note that this stage may be subject to alteration as the ongoing farmer protests in Andalucía unfold and evolve.
“The del Vuelta a Andalucia will resume Friday with a time trial in Alcaudete and will conclude next Sunday, Due to the inability to count on state security members, the organization had to reduce the race to three stages, and partly modify the route of the stages. We are waiting at this time for the problems arising from agricultural and transport claims in Spain to be resolved.” latest updates on the race, check the official Facebook page.
Andalucía is currently experiencing farmer protests, drawing police attention away from other matters. Since February 6, Spanish farmers have been protesting EU regulations and urging increased support for the agricultural sector from the Spanish government.
Protestors, by blocking roads and causing disruptions in traffic, have led to a situation where the Guardía Civil cannot allocate enough manpower to ensure the safe conduct of a road race. This manpower is crucial for maintaining closed roads during the event.
Following discussions among stakeholders, the race organizers revealed the revised schedule for the three stages. The lineup includes a 5km time trial around a circuit in Jienense on Friday, a 100km circuit race around Lucena featuring 2,000 meters of climbing and a summit finish on Saturday, and the initially planned 168km stage from Benahavís to La Línea de la Concepción on Sunday. However, organizers have a contingency route in place for the final day in case it becomes necessary.
